Global management consulting firm Bain & Company has signed its first direct air capture (DAC)-based carbon removal agreement, entering a deal with 1PointFive, the carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration subsidiary of Occidental (Oxy). The agreement covers the purchase of 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits over a three-year period.
The deal marks a milestone for Bain as it expands its portfolio of engineered carbon removal solutions in support of its long-term climate commitments.
Direct Air Capture from the STRATOS Facility
The CDR credits will be generated using DAC technology at 1PointFive’s STRATOS facility in Texas. The facility captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, compresses it into a liquid, and permanently stores it deep underground or uses it in the production of low-carbon products.
Currently progressing through start-up activities, STRATOS is expected to become the world’s largest DAC facility once fully operational, with a designed capture capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
Anthony Cottone, President and General Manager of 1PointFive, said the collaboration highlights growing momentum behind DAC as a scalable climate solution and supports the build-out of critical domestic carbon management infrastructure.

Bain’s Net-Negative Strategy
Bain has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050 and has pursued a more ambitious interim approach. Since 2021, the firm has aimed to be net-negative by voluntarily offsetting more than 100 percent of its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions through the purchase of high-quality carbon removal credits.
Over the past five years, Bain has invested in approximately 1.1 million tonnes of carbon removal credits. The agreement with 1PointFive represents Bain’s first purchase of DAC-based removals, complementing its existing portfolio of nature-based and engineered solutions.
Sam Israelit, Chief Sustainability Officer at Bain, said the partnership reflects confidence in 1PointFive’s technical capabilities and experience in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects, positioning DAC as an important pillar in Bain’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Why It Matters
The agreement underscores growing corporate demand for high-integrity, engineered carbon removal as companies move beyond conventional offsets toward more durable climate solutions. As DAC technologies scale, early corporate offtake agreements like this one are playing a critical role in accelerating deployment, reducing costs, and establishing market confidence in next-generation carbon removal infrastructure.
