ASUENE Acquires UK's Secaro, Its Eighth Deal, to Expand US and EU Reach

ASUENE Acquires UK's Secaro, Its Eighth Deal, to Expand US and EU Reach

ASUENE has completed its acquisition of Secaro, a UK-based supply chain carbon management platform serving more than 8,000 companies across over 90 countries, marking the Japanese sustainability software company's eighth acquisition to date. The deal deepens ASUENE's presence in Europe and North America as manufacturers face mounting regulatory pressure to measure and disclose Scope 3 emissions. ASUENE says its customer base has doubled to 56,000 over the past year across Japan, Asia, North America and Europe.

Why Secaro's Customer Base Makes This Deal Strategic

Secaro's clients include major global manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda and General Motors, concentrated in sectors including automotive and pharmaceuticals where supply chains span dozens of tiers and countries. Manufacturers in these industries face a particularly acute version of the Scope 3 measurement challenge, since a single vehicle or pharmaceutical product typically incorporates components sourced from hundreds of suppliers across multiple continents, each contributing embedded emissions that are extraordinarily difficult to track without dedicated supply chain data infrastructure.

That customer concentration gives ASUENE immediate access to some of the most demanding and complex supply chain emissions accounting use cases in existence, rather than needing to build automotive and pharmaceutical sector expertise from scratch. Acquiring an established platform already trusted by major automotive manufacturers is a faster route to credibility in that sector than attempting to win those customers independently, particularly given how conservative large manufacturers tend to be about switching core compliance and data infrastructure providers.

The Regulatory Timeline Driving Demand

The acquisition lands against a specific and tightening regulatory calendar across ASUENE's target markets. In the European Union, the largest companies are already reporting under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, with a further wave of smaller companies required to comply from 2028. In the UK, Sustainability Reporting Standards aligned with the International Sustainability Standards Board are proposed to become mandatory for listed companies from 2027. Scope 3 emissions typically represent the largest share of a company's total carbon footprint, making supply chain data collection an increasingly urgent compliance requirement rather than a voluntary sustainability initiative across all three of ASUENE's target regions.

That regulatory timeline explains the urgency behind ASUENE's acquisition pace: companies facing 2027 and 2028 compliance deadlines need supply chain emissions infrastructure in place well before those dates to have workable data collection and reporting processes running, giving platforms like ASUENE and Secaro a defined window in which manufacturers are actively seeking solutions rather than deferring the decision indefinitely.

How This Fits ASUENE's Broader Strategy

This acquisition follows directly from ASUENE's recently closed $87 million Series D funding round, led by Decarbonization Partners, the BlackRock and Temasek joint venture, which explicitly earmarked proceeds for international M&A across Europe, North America and Asia. Secaro represents a concrete deployment of that capital and strategy, following what the companies describe as a business alliance agreement signed in July 2025 that evolved into full acquisition, a common pattern in enterprise software consolidation where companies test commercial compatibility through partnership before committing to a full merger.

Founder and chief executive Kohei Nishiwada framed the deal as strengthening ASUENE's product-level CO2 and lifecycle assessment capabilities while connecting supply chain data globally, including Japan and Asia, positioning the combination as aiming for clear leadership in manufacturing supply chain emissions management. Secaro chief executive Toby Newman described the combination as pairing Secaro's supplier engagement expertise with ASUENE's AI capabilities and international reach to accelerate decarbonisation at global scale. Whether this acquisition, ASUENE's eighth, proves as strategically valuable as the automotive and pharmaceutical customer relationships suggest, and whether the company continues this acquisition pace to meet its stated ambition of becoming the global standard for manufacturing supply chains, will determine how effectively ASUENE's newly raised capital translates into genuine international market position.
