Apple Slashes Over 60% of Its Global Emissions, Sets New Sustainability Benchmarks

Apple’s 60% emissions cut is more than a climate milestone—it’s a call to action. Through recycled innovation, clean energy partnerships, and transparent reporting, the company is laying out a blueprint for large-scale corporate decarbonization. As 2030 approaches, the challenge will only grow, but so will the opportunity to lead.

In a major leap toward its climate goals, Apple announced it has reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% since 2015. The milestone, detailed in the company’s 2024 Environmental Progress Report, signals significant movement toward Apple’s commitment to become carbon neutral across its entire value chain by 2030.

This progress is the result of comprehensive strategies across the tech giant’s global operations—from the materials used in products and renewable energy adoption to aggressive waste reduction and water conservation efforts.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. “As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration and urgency.”

Supply Chain: Clean Energy, Massive Emission Cuts

In 2024 alone, Apple’s global supplier network delivered 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity, helping avoid 21.8 million tonnes of emissions. That’s a 17% increase from 2023, as Apple accelerates its mission for every supplier to run entirely on clean power by the end of the decade.

The company’s energy efficiency programs added even more impact, preventing an additional 2 million tonnes of emissions last year through retrofits, smarter energy management, and sustainable practices across factories.

Semiconductor & Display Emissions: Tackling F-GHGs at the Source

Apple is confronting one of the electronics industry’s most potent climate challenges: fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs) from chip and display manufacturing.

26 semiconductor suppliers have committed to reduce 90% of F-GHG emissions by 2030.

100% of direct display suppliers have signed on to the same goal.

These efforts resulted in the abatement of 8.4 million tonnes of emissions in 2024 alone.

Materials and Recycling: Closing the Loop

In 2024, Apple achieved record use of recycled content:

  • 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets
  • 99% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries — representing over 97% of Apple’s cobalt use

These materials come from responsible sources with strict human rights and environmental safeguards across the supply chain.

Waste Diversion and Water Stewardship

Apple’s Zero Waste Program helped divert 600,000 tonnes of waste from landfills in 2024, totaling 3.6 million tonnes since 2015.

Meanwhile, the company’s Supplier Clean Water Program achieved:

  • 53 trillion litres of water saved in 2024
  • Over 340 trillion litres conserved since 2013
  • Over 40% of its water replenishment goal met for high-stress regions by 2030

Carbon-Neutral Products: The New Normal

Apple is integrating carbon-neutral principles directly into its products. Highlights from 2024:

  • New MacBook Air made with over 55% recycled content
  • Apple Watch available in fully carbon-neutral models
  • Mac mini now the first carbon-neutral Mac

Apple continues to reduce emissions across materials, energy, and transport — using offsets only for unavoidable residual impact.

Consumer Engagement: Earth Day and Beyond

Apple is involving consumers in its sustainability journey with:

  • Trade-in and in-store recycling programs offering 10% off accessories (until May 16)
  • Earth Day-themed content on Apple TV+, Apple Fitness+ challenges, and Time to Walk stories

The company believes progress is only meaningful when shared with its community of users worldwide.
