Apple Shareholders Overwhelmingly Reject Proposal to End DEI Programs

Apple shareholders voted 97% against eliminating DEI programs, reinforcing the company’s commitment to diversity despite legal and political challenges. CEO Tim Cook signaled possible adjustments but affirmed that Apple’s values remain unchanged.

Apple shareholders have resoundingly reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), voting 97% against a proposal to eliminate its DEI initiatives.

The proposal, introduced by the conservative think tank National Center for Public Policy Research, argued that Apple’s DEI policies could pose legal risks amid shifting U.S. regulations. However, Apple’s board urged shareholders to reject it, emphasizing that diversity remains a core business strategy.

Tim Cook Stands by DEI—With Possible Adjustments

CEO Tim Cook reiterated Apple’s dedication to diversity, stating:

“Our strength has always come from hiring the very best people and then providing a culture of collaboration, one where people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives come together to innovate.”

However, Cook acknowledged that legal shifts may require Apple to adjust its approach:

“As the legal landscape evolves, we may need to make some changes to comply, but our north star of dignity and respect for everyone will never waver.”

The Bigger DEI Debate

Apple’s vote comes as corporate DEI programs face increased legal and political scrutiny. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action and political actions restricting DEI preferences, some companies have scaled back similar initiatives.

Despite this, Apple continues to integrate diversity into its business model, including through supplier diversity efforts and employee performance review policies. While future legal challenges could impact corporate DEI strategies, Apple’s leadership signaled that diversity will remain a business priority.
