Antora Plans 5.8 GWh Thermal Battery for Kansas Biorefinery

Antora Plans 5.8 GWh Thermal Battery for Kansas Biorefinery

Antora Energy has announced a 5.8 GWh multi-day thermal energy storage project at Pratt Energy’s biorefinery in Kansas, positioning it among the largest battery storage projects globally. Backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Grok Ventures and University Pension Plan Ontario, the project is expected to begin supplying around-the-clock energy to the facility under a long-term heat offtake agreement from next year. Antora says the development will also support more than 100 construction and operations jobs and help Pratt Energy move towards producing ethanol with zero carbon intensity.

Thermal Storage Is Being Used to Replace Industrial Heat

Antora’s system stores low-cost electricity as heat inside insulated blocks of solid carbon and later delivers that energy as industrial heat or electricity. At Pratt Energy, the technology will be used to supply continuous energy to a biorefinery, where thermal demand is a major part of the production process.

That makes the project different from battery systems built mainly to balance electricity grids. Antora is targeting industrial processes that need reliable heat over long periods, using stored electricity to reduce dependence on conventional fuel-based heat while keeping operations running around the clock.

The 5.8 GWh Scale Builds on Antora’s Earlier Deployment

The Kansas project follows Antora’s commissioning earlier this year of a 5 GWh thermal battery system in Big Stone City, South Dakota. Moving from one multi-gigawatt-hour deployment to another suggests the company is trying to establish a repeatable model for large industrial customers rather than treating each installation as a one-off demonstration.

The modular design is also central to that strategy. Antora says the same factory-built system can be used across sectors including chemicals, food processing, steel and grid applications, giving the company a wider market than a technology designed for a single industrial process.

The Project Links Energy Storage With Low-Carbon Ethanol

Pratt Energy expects the new energy supply to improve efficiency and support its longer-term goal of producing ethanol with 100% zero carbon intensity. That creates a direct link between the storage system and the carbon footprint of an industrial product rather than using the battery only to shift power prices or manage demand.

The source does not quantify how much the thermal battery alone will reduce the biorefinery’s emissions, so the eventual carbon impact will depend on the electricity supplying the system and how much fossil-based heat it displaces. The project will therefore be important not only for its storage capacity but for whether the technology can deliver meaningful reductions in the operating emissions of the facility.

Infrastructure Investors Are Backing the Industrial Model

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners led the project’s third-party equity financing through its credit platform, with Grok Ventures and University Pension Plan Ontario also participating. The involvement of large infrastructure investors gives Antora another test of whether thermal batteries can attract capital on the basis of long-term industrial energy contracts rather than relying mainly on early-stage technology funding.

Reiner Boehning, Partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, said the project combines established technology, project economics and a model that can be repeated at scale. For Antora, securing capital from infrastructure investors is important as it moves from proving the technology to financing multiple large deployments.

The Next Test Is Whether Industrial Storage Can Scale Beyond Early Projects

The Pratt project is expected to create more than 100 construction and operations jobs and will be accompanied by internships, scholarships and a community investment fund in Pratt County. Antora has also partnered with Pratt Community College to develop local technical skills linked to the project.

The bigger test will be operational. If Antora can deliver 5.8 GWh of storage, provide reliable heat under the long-term offtake agreement and help lower the carbon intensity of ethanol production, the project would strengthen the case for thermal batteries as an industrial decarbonization tool across sectors that require large amounts of continuous heat.
