A Science-Backed Approach to Carbon Credits

Amazon’s carbon credit investments will focus on three key areas:

  • Preventing deforestation
  • Restoring forests
  • Advancing technological carbon removal

To ensure high-impact and verifiable carbon credits, Amazon will:

  • Work with third-party experts to monitor and validate projects
  • Apply a first-principles approach to impact evaluation
  • Adapt methodologies as science and technology evolve

Companies eligible for the service must:

  • Commit to net zero targets, covering Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions
  • Measure and publicly report their carbon footprint
  • Implement decarbonization strategies aligned with climate science

Driving Private Sector Investment in Carbon Removal

Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the service’s role in tackling the voluntary carbon market’s credibility issues:

“The voluntary carbon market has been challenged with transparency and quality concerns, leading to skepticism about nature-based and technological carbon removal. However, the science is clear: We must halt and reverse deforestation and restore millions of miles of forests to slow climate change. We’re using our size and high vetting standards to drive more investment into these critical solutions.”

Expanding Amazon’s Sustainability Commitment

The carbon credit service is an expansion of Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange, which launched last year to provide free access to sustainability tools for suppliers and corporate partners.

Amazon remains committed to reducing its own emissions while also investing in scalable carbon removal initiatives that can drive broader climate action. The new service will be available to Amazon suppliers, enterprise customers, and signatories of The Climate Pledge.

As voluntary carbon markets face increasing scrutiny, Amazon’s initiative could set a new standard for corporate carbon credit investments—prioritizing transparency, scientific integrity, and measurable climate impact.
