The initiative aims to replenish approximately one hundred fifty million liters of water annually through a combination of vegetative restoration, improved planting practices and erosion control measures. The goal is to slow runoff, increase groundwater recharge and reduce pollution flowing into the Santiago River basin. By rebuilding natural absorption capacity, the project is designed to support both water availability and healthier ecosystem function in the surrounding landscape.
Supporting River Health and Resilience in the United States
Two of the new interventions are based in the United States and target regions facing mounting hydrological stress. In New Mexico, Amazon is backing a project focused on maintaining critical flows in the Rio Grande during drought conditions. These flows are essential for sustaining wetlands and supporting endangered species that depend on consistent water levels for survival. The initiative forms part of a wider effort to increase the resilience of river systems that have been strained by extreme heat and falling snowpack. In North Carolina, Amazon is contributing to the restoration of longleaf pine ecosystems across twenty thousand acres. The longleaf pine landscape, once widespread across the southeast, plays an important role in enabling rainfall to infiltrate the ground, replenishing aquifers and surface water systems. The restored forest is expected to generate more than one and a half million cubic meters of water each year by improving soil structure and enhancing natural hydrology.
Reviving the Thames River Basin Through Habitat and Water Quality Improvements
In the United Kingdom, Amazon has partnered with The Rivers Trust to support the restoration of the Thames River Basin. The project focuses on reconnecting the river to its floodplain by removing barriers and restoring natural flow pathways. These interventions aim to increase water retention, reduce flood risks and improve overall water quality. They also create new habitats for threatened wildlife species that rely on a healthy river system. The work is part of a broader push to restore urban and peri urban watersheds that have suffered from decades of pollution, channelisation and habitat loss.
