Amazon and RWE Secure Long-Term Offshore Wind Power Agreement in Germany

Amazon and RWE Secure Long-Term Offshore Wind Power Agreement in Germany

Amazon and RWE have signed a long-term power purchase agreement for 110 megawatts of offshore wind electricity from RWE’s Nordseecluster project in the German North Sea. The deal adds to Amazon’s growing renewable energy footprint in Germany and provides long-term revenue certainty for one of the country’s largest offshore wind developments.

According to RWE, the contracted capacity is expected to generate enough clean electricity each year to meet the needs of more than 139,000 German households, contributing directly to Germany’s expanding offshore wind supply.

Building on a Strategic Energy and Digital Partnership

The agreement follows a Strategic Framework Agreement signed by the two companies in June 2025, which established a broader collaboration beyond energy procurement. Under that framework, RWE supports Amazon’s carbon-free energy objectives, while Amazon provides cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics services to support RWE’s digital transformation across its operations.

This dual-track partnership reflects a growing trend among large corporates and utilities, where long-term clean power contracts are combined with technology collaboration to improve grid operations, forecasting, and asset performance.

Nordseecluster Offshore Wind Development Timeline

The Nordseecluster offshore wind project is being developed in two phases. Nordseecluster A, with a total installed capacity of 660 megawatts, is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. Nordseecluster B will add a further 900 megawatts, with commercial operations expected to commence in 2029.

By structuring the project in phases, RWE is able to bring capacity online progressively while securing long-term offtake agreements that support financing and grid integration.

Role of PPAs in Germany’s Energy Transition

RWE emphasised the importance of corporate power purchase agreements in accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while maintaining security of supply. Long-term PPAs help enable capital-intensive offshore wind projects by providing predictable demand and revenue, reducing exposure to wholesale market volatility.

As Germany continues to phase out fossil fuel generation and expand renewable capacity, such agreements are increasingly seen as a critical mechanism for scaling offshore wind while ensuring system resilience.

Amazon’s Expanding Renewable Energy Footprint in Germany

The Nordseecluster contract marks Amazon’s fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in Germany. When combined with six on-site solar projects, Amazon’s total renewable energy portfolio in the country now stands at approximately 790 megawatts of capacity.

Once fully operational, Amazon’s renewable projects in Germany are expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German homes annually. The company has positioned these investments as part of its broader commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.

Long-Term Implications for Corporate Energy Procurement

For Amazon, the agreement strengthens long-term access to carbon-free electricity in one of its key European markets, while supporting national renewable energy goals. For RWE, the deal reinforces the role of corporate buyers in enabling large-scale offshore wind development and underscores the increasing alignment between digital infrastructure growth and clean energy investment.

As corporate demand for clean power continues to rise, agreements like this are likely to play a growing role in shaping Europe’s offshore wind buildout and the evolution of long-term energy markets.
