The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has committed $50 million to the TPG Rise Climate Global South Initiative Fund, with up to an additional $50 million available for co-investments. The fund is designed to increase climate investment across emerging and developing economies in Asia, the Middle East and Africa by attracting long-term private capital into climate-related projects and businesses.
Developed in partnership with ALTÉRRA, the Global South Initiative operates as a parallel vehicle to TPG Rise Climate II. It will target sectors including energy transition, green mobility, sustainable fuels, sustainable materials and products, carbon solutions, and climate adaptation and resilience. The structure is intended to give investors greater access to climate opportunities in markets where financing gaps remain significant.
"Mobilizing private capital is one of AIIB’s core thematic priorities and fundamental to closing the climate investment gap in emerging markets," said Kim-See Lim, AIIB Chief Investment Officer, Public Sector (Region 1) & Financial Institutions and Funds (Global) Clients. "Through this partnership with TPG, AIIB is supporting the expansion of innovative climate solutions in emerging markets, while strengthening climate finance ecosystems across our members."
AIIB expects its participation to help attract additional private capital alongside TPG Rise Climate and other co-investors. The commitment also supports the bank’s target of directing 50% of annual financing to private-sector-oriented operations by 2030, while contributing to wider Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goal objectives.
The fund is classified as Article 9 under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, meaning sustainable investment is one of its stated objectives. The combination of AIIB capital, co-investment capacity and TPG’s climate investment platform is intended to expand financing for climate projects across emerging markets while creating a larger pipeline for private investors.
