The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) is making significant strides to instill a culture of sustainability among Abu Dhabi's youth. Through a series of initiatives, the DoE seeks to enhance awareness and conservation efforts, aligning with the UAE’s ambitious 2050 net-zero targets.

Education at the Core

At the heart of the DoE’s approach is the Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy 2030. This strategy aims to cut electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 32% by 2030. The Behavioural Change program plays a key role in this strategy, focusing on improving policy effectiveness and encouraging energy and water-efficient practices.

Eng. Ahmed Juma Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector at DoE, emphasized the importance of education:

“Our new initiatives aim to educate and empower individuals, creating a society that is highly aware of the importance of rationalizing electricity and water consumption and how to conserve them.”

Engaging the Next Generation

In partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), the DoE has launched the Children’s Kit initiative. Nearly 2,000 students have received kits tailored for two age groups, which include guides on sustainable living and practical tools such as water-efficient showerheads and solar-powered chargers. This initiative not only imparts essential knowledge but also fosters a sense of responsibility and promotes efficient habits from a young age.

Innovative Learning Tools

Furthering its educational efforts, the DoE has introduced “EnergiX,” a gamified learning app available on Apple and Android devices. This interactive tool teaches children and their parents about energy and water conservation through engaging gameplay. By making sustainability education enjoyable, the DoE is embedding these vital values in the next generation, ensuring they carry forward these lessons.

These initiatives by the DoE are crucial for shaping a more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi, inspiring young minds to contribute to environmental conservation and energy efficiency.
