Job Description

Position summary

MBDA is seeking a Sustainable Procurement Manager to help embed sustainable procurement into all aspects of how the company buys, and to build the right level of collaboration with its supply chain partners. The role requires the post holder to have, or be willing to develop, skills across ESG topics in order to lead initiatives with supply chain partners to reduce Scope 3 emissions, including owning the systems used to assess ESG risks in the supply chain and how suppliers are performing.

Why this role matters

This role helps MBDA meet increasingly stringent government and contractual ESG reporting requirements while driving real improvement in its supply chain. By running the ESG supplier assessment tools, engaging high-risk and high-emission suppliers, and building the procurement community's ESG capability, the Sustainable Procurement Manager advances MBDA's sustainable procurement journey and its Scope 3 reduction ambitions.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic understanding: Understand the strategic aims of Sustainable Procurement and the interdependencies with other activities across Procurement UK.
  • Supply chain engagement: Lead initiatives to engage the supply chain, facilitating exploratory discussions around sustainable procurement and suppliers' ESG activities.
  • ESG assessment tools: Project-manage the successful use of the ESG supplier assessment tool(s), acting as subject matter expert on the portal, training PUK colleagues, providing regular reporting, and proactively managing flagged risks.
  • Scope 3: Develop skills across ESG and procurement to lead supply chain initiatives aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions.
  • Supplier performance: Proactively manage suppliers identified as high risk or high emissions, review all data, KPIs, and reports, provide data-led feedback, and agree improvement plans where performance is below expectation.
  • Reporting: Introduce and maintain simplified sustainable procurement reporting that reduces report volume while improving consistency and quality.
  • Training materials: Contribute to designing training materials for the PUK community and supply chain, gathering feedback and measuring usage.
  • Events and education: Support initiatives to educate on sustainable procurement across PUK, and project-manage internal and external engagement events and conferences.
  • Risk management: Ensure risks, opportunities, and issues are reported at team meetings with mitigation options, and that objectives are delivered to timescale via a clear project plan.

Team and stakeholders

The role joins a small, highly motivated Sustainable Procurement team within Procurement UK, working with colleagues across all MBDA functions and externally with the company's suppliers and supply chain partners.

Key details

  • Work arrangement: Dynamic (hybrid) working, 1 to 2 days per week on-site; UK travel required and occasionally within Europe.
  • Security clearance: British citizen or dual UK national with British citizenship; BPSS checks and SC Clearance required (managed by MBDA's Personnel Security Team), with possible nationality-related restrictions.
  • Compensation: Circa £46,000 depending on experience, plus a company bonus of up to £2,500 (performance-dependent), pension up to a combined 14 percent, paid overtime, up to 15 days flexi leave, and enhanced parental leave.

Requirements:

  • Experience in, or willingness to learn about, ESG and sustainable procurement.
  • Ability to prioritise competing demands, and to stay adaptable and flexible against frequently uncertain or changing requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, including presenting complex concepts simply and concisely, and confidence preparing reports internally and externally, verbally and in writing.
  • Strong Excel skills, comfortable managing spreadsheets and undertaking data analysis.
  • Confidence briefing a range of information and tailoring outputs to diverse stakeholders.
  • Rounded business acumen and the ability to engage credibly across the enterprise.
