Job Description

Position summary

Centrica is seeking a Sustainability Transformation Manager, reporting to the Group Sustainability Transformation Director, to play a critical role in developing and implementing the organisation's sustainability initiatives and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and standards, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and EU Taxonomy (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). The role plans and co-ordinates programme management, ensuring requirements are scoped, developed, and translated into plans with delivery controls in place across risks, issues, finances, and timelines.

Why this role matters

This role is central to how Centrica meets its evolving ESG regulatory obligations across the group. By building compliant CSRD/CSDDD processes, transforming ESG reporting systems, and driving group-wide change programmes, you help ensure the company's sustainability disclosures are accurate, efficient, and assurance-ready as requirements continue to develop.

Key responsibilities

  • Compliance programmes: Support the CSRD Programme Director in developing and executing group-wide ESG compliance and change programmes for requirements such as CSRD and CSDDD.
  • Process implementation: Support the development and implementation of CSRD/CSDDD processes across the group, ensuring consistent, coherent compliance and alignment with programmes such as the Risk & Controls Upgrade and Enterprise Risk Management.
  • Data capture: Lead work across functions and business units to specify, identify, develop, and implement mechanisms for data and metric capture, including procuring and implementing new data systems where necessary.
  • System transformation: Lead ESG reporting system transformation, seeking efficiency and quality through automation, systems integration, and AI.
  • Policies and targets: Work across businesses and functions to help establish ESG policies, goals, and targets required by ESG regulations.
  • Project management: Lead project management, scoping and planning requirements with delivery controls, documenting key milestones, and cascading them across workstreams.
  • Governance: Prepare materials for and help run Project Boards, working groups, and Exec Steer Co, monitoring, reviewing, and reporting on project and programme attributes.
  • Benchmarking: Benchmark published peer reports to compare material impacts, risks, and opportunities and approaches to meeting regulatory datapoints.
  • Regulatory artefacts: Develop regulatory artefacts into structured spreadsheets for gap analysis, implementation tracking, and xBRL tagging.
  • Reporting and assurance: Oversee the preparation and submission of compliant annual reporting under CSRD/CSDDD, and work with Group Finance to facilitate third-party limited assurance.
  • Communication and advisory: Support internal communication and education on CSRD/CSDDD, and work with Legal to monitor and advise on current and future environmental, social, and ESG regulatory changes.

Team and stakeholders

You will report to the Group Sustainability Transformation Director and collaborate daily across all business units and functions, working with senior leaders and subject matter experts. Key partners include the HSE, Environmental, Responsible Business, People, Legal, and Finance teams, plus Group Business Services (GBS) and cross-functional CSRD/CSDDD working groups.

Requirements:

  • In-depth knowledge of sustainability principles, environmental and social regulations, compliance standards, and best practices, including CSRD, EU Taxonomy, and CSDDD.
  • A minimum of 3 years delivering large projects within a structured project delivery life cycle, and at least 3 years in ESG, sustainability, or related roles with a track record of successful programme development and implementation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to interpret and present complex data.
  • Experience in ESG data collection and analysis, development of metrics and KPIs, reporting systems, and disclosures, including automation of reporting processes and implementation of new systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels and simplify complex technical messages.
  • Demonstrated team management and strong project management skills in a matrix organisation, with high attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, ESG, or another relevant field; project management qualifications such as PRINCE2, APM, or Agile are desirable.
  • Functionally IT literate, comfortable with ambiguity and changing deadlines, and technically competent with Microsoft Office data, presentation, and planning tools.
