Job Description
Position summary
Argos is hiring a Sustainability Lead to be its carbon specialist, leading the carbon programme and turning the retailer’s environmental ambitions into action. From understanding the carbon footprint and shaping the route to net zero, to working with teams and suppliers to identify and deliver emissions reductions, the role drives decarbonisation across Argos’s operations and wider value chain.
Why this role matters
Sustainability is central to how Argos is shaping its future, and this role sits at the heart of it. By bringing together carbon, operational, supplier and product data, it helps the business understand where its biggest opportunities lie and make better, lower-carbon decisions across a complex, product-led retailer.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the carbon reduction programme across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, translating commitments into clear plans, targets and practical actions.
- Build the emissions picture by bringing together carbon, operational, supplier and product data to understand the emissions profile and identify where to focus next.
- Drive progress to net zero by monitoring performance and supporting carbon reporting, climate disclosures and wider sustainability requirements.
- Partner across the business with Commercial, Technical, Sourcing, Property, Logistics, Finance and Sustainability teams to identify and deliver emissions-reduction opportunities and embed decarbonisation into decision-making.
- Engage suppliers and external partners to help address emissions across the wider value chain, particularly Scope 3.
- Shape carbon policies and standards and keep watch on emerging climate and carbon requirements, ensuring risks and opportunities are understood and acted on.
Team and stakeholders
The role works across Commercial, Technical, Sourcing, Property, Logistics, Finance and Sustainability, bringing people together around a shared decarbonisation goal, and partners with suppliers, industry groups and external organisations on Scope 3 and supplier emissions. It supports governance and decision-making by making carbon clear and actionable for stakeholders.
Key details

- Competitive salary plus benefits, including colleague discount, pension, life cover and an eligible performance-related bonus of up to 10% of salary.
- Argos is a digital-led UK general merchandise retailer, part of the Sainsbury’s group.

- Strong project and programme management skills across multiple priorities, workstreams and stakeholders.
- The ability to analyse, interpret and communicate carbon and emissions data (operational, product and supplier) to identify hotspots, risks and reduction opportunities and track performance.
- Experience developing or supporting carbon or climate-related policies, standards, guidance or business processes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to build relationships and influence teams, suppliers and external partners.
- Experience identifying and managing carbon, climate or decarbonisation risks and opportunities using sound judgement and established governance.
