Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Manager
£Competitive, Surrey
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced sustainability professional to join a fast-paced, international food business supplying major UK retailers and foodservice customers. Reporting to the Technical Director and managing a Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Executive, the successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of sustainability, ethical sourcing, and ESG initiatives across a global supply chain.
The role is responsible for implementing responsible sourcing strategies, with a particular focus on seafood supply chains, ensuring products are sourced ethically, sustainably, and in compliance with industry standards. Key responsibilities include overseeing supplier engagement, traceability, fisheries improvement programmes, human rights due diligence, and modern slavery compliance. The successful candidate will work closely with suppliers to drive continuous improvement, monitor sustainability performance, and ensure alignment with company policies and customer expectations.
The position also involves leading sustainability reporting by developing and tracking KPIs, preparing ESG reports, and supporting carbon reduction initiatives, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reporting. Additional responsibilities include monitoring biodiversity and marine ecosystem developments, maintaining supplier risk assessments, responding to customer sustainability enquiries, and building strong relationships with industry organisations and external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will stay informed of emerging sustainability legislation and ethical trade requirements, ensuring the business remains compliant with evolving regulations while supporting long-term sustainability objectives. Regular travel to suppliers, factories, fisheries, and industry events may be required.Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent experience in sustainability, environmental science, food supply chains, fisheries, marine science, or a related discipline. They will have proven experience managing sustainability, ethical sourcing, or ESG programmes within retail or food supply chains, together with excellent stakeholder management, analytical, and communication skills. Experience with seafood supply chains, traceability systems, carbon accounting, modern slavery compliance, Sedex/SMETA, fisheries improvement programmes, or packaging sustainability would be advantageous, as would previous people management experience.
