Job Description

Position summary

Mars is seeking a Sustainability & Climate Data Lead to help deliver its Sustainable in a Generation (SIG) Plan, including achieving Net Zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2050. This individual-contributor role is a strategic enabler who collaborates with the value chain and third-party partners to build and govern Mars’ impact factor pipeline, empowers cross-functional teams to pioneer lower-footprint product innovations, and rapidly builds Mars Snacking’s climate analytics capabilities, turning rigorous data into business action.

Why this role matters

Mars’ sustainability strategies must be backed by sound data and analytics that strengthen business decisions and ensure delivery of results. This role provides deep technical sustainability expertise, advanced quantitative analysis, and strong project governance to make Mars’ GHG reporting credible, auditable, and audit-ready.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as a technical SME on climate accounting requirements, including GHG removals, farm project MRV (monitoring, reporting, and validation), co-product allocation, mass-balance versus traceability approaches, and verification protocols.
  • Develop supplier GHG impact factors by providing GHG technical guidance and project management, engaging sourcing teams on supplier data collection, analyzing data with impact factor consultants, and integrating outputs into Mars’ GHG reporting.
  • Ensure credible integration by engaging external consultants on farm tool methodology and LCA reviews for auditable integration of primary supply data.
  • Manage impact factor quality by overseeing the end-to-end application, validation, and QA of GHG impact factors for annual reporting, mapping new raw materials and ingredients for a complete, audit-ready database.
  • Mitigate delivery risks across the impact factor pipeline, serving as lead troubleshooter and designing recovery plans to protect reporting deadlines.
  • Track evolving standards by maintaining an advanced understanding of global climate accounting standards and practices.
  • Guide R&D and innovation by helping evaluate new ingredients and formulation changes for climate-smart product design, and championing Mars Snacking’s technical accounting priorities across segments.

Team and stakeholders

An individual contributor within Procurement, the role collaborates with value chain and third-party partners, sourcing teams, impact factor and LCA consultants, R&D teams, and cross-functional segments as an enabler of the broader Healthy Planet operating model.

Key details

This is a full-time, hybrid role based in Chicago, IL. Compensation includes variable pay, medical and dental benefits, 401k, and paid time off, plus a company bonus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science/Technical, Data Science, Sustainable Management, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field (MBA/graduate degree a plus).
  • 5+ years of professional sustainability experience as a technical expert, including significant experience generating, tracking, and analyzing robust quantitative data.
  • Deep expertise with GHG measurement and accounting and MRV systems across relevant metrics (carbon, soil health, water, biodiversity), and knowledge of standards like the GHG Protocol.
  • Strong project management skills, including prioritisation, scope management, and risk mitigation.
  • Quantitative reasoning skills, able to work with numbers and summarise data into graphical or tabular forms.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, able to translate highly technical information into compelling narratives for fact-based decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and manage internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint, comfort with digital data-management systems, and advanced spreadsheet analytics.
