Position summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a motivated and technically strong Sustainability and Carbon Consultant to join its growing Carbon & Sustainability team within the Sustainable Futures Practice. The role focuses on delivering whole life carbon assessment, carbon modelling, carbon management, and decarbonisation advisory services across major infrastructure, transport, water, energy, and built environment projects. You will support clients in quantifying, understanding, and reducing carbon emissions, providing the evidence needed to drive better project, programme, and investment decisions, and will also support the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments for the planning of major projects.

Why this role matters

This role provides the carbon evidence base that helps AtkinsRéalis' clients make better project, programme, and investment decisions. By delivering whole life carbon assessments, carbon models, and decarbonisation pathways, you help clients quantify and reduce emissions across major infrastructure and built-environment projects and support their route to net zero.

Key responsibilities

  • Carbon assessment: Deliver whole life carbon assessments, carbon footprinting studies, and net zero transition pathways across infrastructure and organisational projects.
  • Carbon modelling: Develop and maintain carbon models, including baseline assessments, hotspot analysis, optioneering studies, scenario modelling, and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Carbon management: Support carbon management services, including Carbon Management Plans, carbon reduction workshops, and performance reporting.
  • Technical reporting: Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and client deliverables that are robust, accurate, and clearly communicated.
  • Client presentation: Present carbon modelling outputs and technical findings to project teams and clients, explaining complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Project support: Support project management activities, including budget monitoring and task coordination on smaller projects.
  • Bids and proposals: Contribute to bids and proposals through technical content, methodology development, and cost estimation.
  • Mentoring: Support and mentor graduates and assistant consultants, sharing technical knowledge and building team capability.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across AtkinsRéalis to integrate carbon considerations into project planning, design, and delivery.

Team and stakeholders

You will join the Carbon & Sustainability team within the Sustainable Futures Practice, working alongside leading carbon and sustainability specialists, mentoring graduates and assistant consultants, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across AtkinsRéalis and with clients.

Key details

  • Work arrangement: Hybrid working culture with flexible holiday allowances.
  • Security clearance: The role may require UK security clearance, which can require proof of UK residency of five years or longer.

Requirements:

  • Strong experience in carbon modelling is essential.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering whole life carbon assessments and/or organisational greenhouse gas inventories independently.
  • Experience applying recognised carbon accounting standards and methodologies, including PAS 2080, the GHG Protocol, and whole life carbon assessment approaches, to develop carbon baselines, hotspot analyses, carbon reduction studies, and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Experience using carbon modelling and assessment tools such as One Click LCA, the National Highways Carbon Tool, the RSSB Carbon Tool, and advanced Excel-based carbon models.
  • Experience in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would be beneficial.
  • Strong analytical skills, able to identify assumptions, interrogate datasets, undertake quantitative analysis, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Experience producing technical reports and presenting complex information to clients and project teams.
  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Working towards a relevant professional qualification is desirable.
