Job Description

Position summary

The Raw Materials team is seeking a Supply Chain specialist to drive Tesla's global decarbonization strategy and develop commodity-specific strategies for aluminum, steel, and plastic resins. You will translate Tesla's net-zero target into sourcing plans, support supplier negotiations, and deliver lower-carbon materials without sacrificing cost, quality, or supply continuity. Working hands-on with commodity managers and internal stakeholders, you will identify and build qualified lower-carbon supply options and give leadership a clear commercial path to Tesla's Net Zero Emissions 2040 goal for these commodities.

Why this role matters

Raw materials like steel and aluminum are among the hardest parts of Tesla's carbon footprint to abate, so this role is central to its Net Zero 2040 goal. By building lower-carbon supply options and locking supplier GHG commitments into contracts, you ensure Tesla's decarbonization strategy is grounded in materials it can actually buy at cost, quality, and scale.

Key responsibilities

  • GHG strategies: Develop and deploy GHG reduction strategies for steel, aluminum, and polymer commodities aligned with Tesla's Global Sustainable Sourcing Policy.
  • Market assessment: Assess market availability, pricing, and competitive risk of lower-carbon materials, and brief Global Commodity Leads and Raw Materials leadership on commercial implications.
  • Supply options: Build and qualify lower-carbon supply options, including recycled content, low-carbon primary metal, and supply backed by renewable electricity, with a clear view of cost, capacity, and specification tradeoffs.
  • Negotiations: Support negotiations on commercial terms and contract language that lock in supplier GHG reduction commitments, product carbon data, and milestone accountability.
  • Cross-functional embedding: Partner with commodity managers, Supplier Industrialization, Engineering, Quality, and Legal to embed sustainability criteria into supplier selection and directed sourcing.
  • Supplier engagement: Lead supplier GHG engagement so reduction projects convert into contracted volume, pricing, and delivery, and equip supporting teams with commercial data so accounting and reporting stay grounded in what Tesla can buy.

Team and stakeholders

You will work within the Raw Materials team, partnering with commodity managers, Global Commodity Leads, Raw Materials leadership, Supplier Industrialization, Engineering, Quality, Legal, and Responsible Sourcing.

Key details

  • Compensation: $104,000 to $192,000 annual salary, plus cash and stock awards and benefits.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel to supplier and production sites as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations Management, Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Experience in commodity management for metals and/or polymers.
  • Working knowledge of supplier greenhouse gas data and product carbon footprints sufficient to negotiate commercial terms and challenge supplier claims.
  • Ability to balance cost, quality, supply continuity, and emissions outcomes in sourcing decisions.
  • Proven supplier negotiation skills, including embedding requirements beyond price into contracts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with commercial, technical, and Responsible Sourcing partners and operate in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
