Position summary
bp is seeking a Senior Sustainability Manager, Carbon to support its carbon net zero aims and ambitions across a wide range of internal and external activities, spanning strategy, carbon accounting, reporting, forecasting, benchmarks, and climate science. Located inside the central Strategy & Sustainability team, the role supports executive-level decision-making and engages across S&S, finance, HSE&C, investor relations, press, communications, and external affairs, as well as the wider businesses. It also leads a team of four, providing direction, support, and development to help them deliver against the sustainability and carbon agenda.

This role is central to how bp shapes and operationalises the carbon dimension of its strategy and meets its net zero ambition. By acting as the company's subject matter authority on greenhouse gas accounting, leading key disclosures, and representing bp in major external forums, you help ensure the company's carbon approach is technically sound, credible with external partners, and aligned with evolving climate disclosure requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Strategy input: Lead the carbon input into bp's Group and business strategies, helping shape how they are operationalised and how performance is handled across the company.
- External representation: Lead bp's participation in external organisations such as IPIECA, the GHG Protocol, and WBCSD, acting as the company's subject matter authority on greenhouse gas accounting and supporting the development of decision-useful standards.
- Policy positions: Develop bp-wide policy positions on GHG accounting and support policy positions on energy transition and climate regulation, such as ETS, EU Methane, and Green Hydrogen.
- Landscape scanning: Maintain knowledge of trends, benchmarks, frameworks, disclosures, and publications (such as IPCC, IEA, WBCSD, and OGCI) and apply an integrated understanding of bp's strategy to support engagement with investors, banks, NGOs, and oil and gas peers.
- Disclosures: Play a lead role in developing key company disclosures, such as the Sustainability Report, and help bp align with forthcoming ESRS and ISSB climate disclosure requirements.
- Executive support: Directly support the VP of Sustainability in day-to-day activities, provide guidance across the sustainability landscape, contribute to leadership team discussions, and mentor and develop the wider team.
- Flexible agenda: Undertake a wide variety of work given the flexible nature of the team and the dynamic carbon and climate science agenda.
Team and stakeholders
You will sit within bp's central Strategy & Sustainability team and lead a team of four. You will support the VP of Sustainability and executive-level decision-making, and engage across S&S, finance, HSE&C, investor relations, press, communications, and external affairs, as well as external partners including IPIECA, the GHG Protocol, WBCSD, investors, banks, NGOs, and industry peers.
Key details
- Work arrangement: Hybrid of office and remote working.
- Travel: Up to 25 percent travel expected.
- Relocation: Not eligible for relocation.
- Future location: The role starts in Sunbury, London, with bp's planned office move to Timber Square, London, expected around Q4 2027 to Q1 2028.

Requirements:
- Carbon management expertise, with a high SME-level understanding of climate science, including pathway modelling (such as IEA and IPCC), economics, carbon accounting and methodologies, and how these principles can be used to develop new accounting and reporting approaches.
- Strong strategic and commercial thinking, with excellent technical and analytical skills and a willingness to get into the detail, up to and including modelling.
- Strong communication and analytical thinking, able to distil complex, cross-disciplinary problems into simple insights and communicate them clearly in written and verbal formats.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, seek support where needed, and drive projects to completion in a dynamic agenda.
- Strong communication and influencing skills across multiple interfaces, with the ability to engage confidently at executive level and manage competing tensions across the business.
- A highly motivated team player able to lead when needed and support others through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and constructive challenge.
