Job Description
Position summary
Atelier Ten, a team of environmental designers and carbon strategists (a member company of Surbana Jurong), is seeking a Senior Environmental Designer / Project Manager for its San Francisco office. In this role, you’ll consult on and manage sustainable building design projects under the guidance of an Associate and/or Director, maintain strong client and design-community relationships, lead design charrettes, and take ownership of reporting, budgeting, and time management to keep projects on track.
Why this role matters
Atelier Ten works with architects, engineers, and owners to bring sustainability, wellness, functionality, and visual goals to high-performance buildings. This role integrates sustainability strategies into a diverse range of built-environment projects — offices, labs, and large masterplans — helping deliver efficient, award-winning, sustainable buildings.
Key responsibilities
- Manage projects independently and proactively from start to finish, forecasting fees and resources and managing budgets effectively.
- Build client relationships through clear communication and responsive service, and coordinate with design and contractor teams for seamless delivery.
- Lead meetings including client presentations, design charrettes, and internal team meetings.
- Integrate sustainability by collaborating with Atelier Ten’s technical analysis teams to embed sustainability strategies into projects.
- Author deliverables including reports, memos, technical studies, and drawings, and create compelling graphic illustrations to communicate technical concepts.
- Work across the built environment on institutional, commercial, and residential buildings and large-scale masterplans, supporting environmental design consulting, daylight and façade analysis, and benchmarking.
Team and stakeholders
Working under the guidance of an Associate and/or Director, the role collaborates with Atelier Ten’s technical analysis and integrated design groups, and with architects, engineers, owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Key details
This is a full-time role based in Atelier Ten’s San Francisco office, with a flexible/hybrid work schedule. Benefits include 100% paid medical/dental/vision, 401k matching, paid parental leave, and annual professional development funds.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in a field related to environmental building design, architecture, architectural engineering, and/or building science.
- 5-10 years’ professional experience in an architecture, engineering, or sustainability consulting firm.
- LEED or WELL AP with specialty certification preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and Word).
- Strong ability in visual communication and sketching.
- Experience with software such as R, Grasshopper, Radiance, Revit, eQuest, EnergyPlus, IES, D3, or data visualization desirable; AutoCAD, Rhino, or graphics software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign) a plus.
- Effective time and budget management, strong technical and business writing, and good verbal and interpersonal ability.
