Position summary

AWS is seeking an Environmental Engineer to support site development and environmental compliance in the London, UK region. The engineer will ensure standards and policies support regulatory operational compliance, provide environmental guidance to regional operations teams, support environmental performance analysis and reporting, and support new site development including environmental permit preparation, communication with authorities, and operational compliance, working with government entities, contractors, consultants, and internal design, construction, and operations teams.

By preparing permits, running audits and incident investigations, submitting regulatory reports, and guiding operations teams, the Environmental Engineer ensures AWS meets the highest environmental standards as it develops and operates critical cloud infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Compliance: Manage and ensure compliance with local and national environmental regulations, contractual obligations, and Amazon policy, representing Amazon with governmental agencies.
• Regional programs: Drive regional environmental programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations teams, fostering an environmentally responsible culture and maintaining environmental management processes and external accreditation.
• Oversight: Ensure work by contractors, consultants, and employees complies with Amazon standards and environmental regulations.
• Metrics: Develop, analyze, and present environmental metrics to measure, monitor, and forecast performance and horizon-scan for risk, communicating insights to stakeholders.
• Reporting: Submit time-critical environmental reports to governmental agencies.
• Audits: Conduct environmental audits and incident investigations, complete regulatory reporting, and develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
• Permitting: Contribute to or lead environmental permitting processes, including preparation, submittal, and negotiation of permit requirements with authorities.

Team and stakeholders

The role works with the AWS Environmental team, engineering, construction, and operations teams, and external partners including government entities, contractors, and consultants.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field, with 7+ years as an environmental technical resource, compliance specialist, or program manager.
• Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, regulatory and liability assessments, permit evaluations and applications, EIAs, and water discharge requirements.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities with experience in environmental reporting, investigations, and corrective actions.
• Ability to work under pressure and handle regulatory deadlines, with strong organizational and time management skills and strong English communication.
• Preferred: data center or critical-environment/facilities experience, master's degree, ISO 14001 knowledge, waste management and circular economy principles, environmental auditing, and understanding of climate change regulations and GHG reporting.
