Job Description

Position summary

NHS Shared Business Services is seeking a Net Zero and Sustainability Manager on a 12-month fixed-term contract to lead environment-related activity and strategy across the organisation. The role sets and leads the carbon reduction strategy, advises and delivers on Science Based Net-Zero by 2040 targets alongside parent organisation Sopra Steria, and leads customer-focused delivery on Scope 3 carbon tracking, including supporting the management of a data manager to oversee a pipeline of opportunity in 2027 and beyond. The role is delivered through NHS SBS's environmental procurement framework and category management.

Why this role matters

This role influences how NHS organisations source smarter, operate more efficiently, and reinvest savings into patient care, while driving NHS SBS's own path to Net Zero. By leading the carbon reduction strategy, Scope 3 tracking, and an environment-focused procurement framework, the manager helps both NHS SBS and its NHS customers cut carbon and meet science-based targets.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategy delivery: Support the strategic framework delivery plan and the carbon reduction strategy toward Science Based Net-Zero by 2040.
  • Supplier and pipeline management: Handle supplier enquiries and take ownership of the database pipelines.
  • Data and market awareness: Support the Principal Category Manager with acquiring key data and building market awareness.
  • Framework marketing: Lead on marketing of the framework using various routes to market.
  • Contract management: Manage suppliers through engagement and supply chain compliance.
  • Portfolio uptake: Support uptake of the framework portfolio across the landscape, working alongside key internal teams.
  • Scope 3 tracking: Lead customer-focused delivery on Scope 3 carbon tracking, supporting a data manager to deliver a pipeline of opportunity.

Team and stakeholders

The role works alongside the Principal Category Manager, supports a data manager, aligns carbon reduction activity with parent organisation Sopra Steria, and engages suppliers, NHS SBS client stakeholders, and key internal teams.

Key details

  • Contract: Fixed-term contract, 12 months.
  • Work arrangement: Primarily home-based, with monthly team meet-ups in Salford and occasional travel for collaboration and industry events.
  • Security clearance: DBS.
  • Compensation and benefits: Competitive salary; 25 days' annual leave with the option to buy more, life assurance, pension, and a flexible benefits fund.

Requirements:

  • Procurement experience within the NHS or public sector.
  • Knowledge of UK Public Contracts Regulations (PCR 2015 or PA 2023).
  • Experience developing and improving key supplier relationships and exploring new opportunities.
  • Environmental category management knowledge/experience.
  • Ability to deliver a portfolio of projects to NHS SBS client stakeholders' expectations and timelines.
  • CIPS Level 4, working towards, or willing to undertake.
