Position summary
In this role, you will lead American's voluntary disclosures and help prepare the airline for upcoming ESG reporting requirements in the U.S. and other countries where it operates. This is an opportunity to enhance the company's existing reporting and shape its wider disclosure strategy, with regular access to subject matter experts and senior leaders. The role is part of the Sustainability Team, reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer within Government Affairs.

This role positions American to meet fast-evolving ESG disclosure requirements while maximizing the impact of its voluntary reporting with shareholders and stakeholders. By leading the Sustainability Report, developing internal controls, and engaging investors and rating agencies, you help ensure the airline's disclosures are transparent, accurate, and audit-ready.
Key responsibilities
- Sustainability Report: Lead development of American's annual Sustainability Report, driving strategic themes and aligning reporting with best-in-class disclosure frameworks.
- Voluntary disclosures: Collaborate with Legal, Finance, Operations, People, and other units to develop voluntary disclosures responsive to investor feedback and mandatory requirements in the U.S. and abroad.
- Internal controls: Partner with the Sustainability Team to develop internal controls for sustainability data and metrics, coordinating with external and internal audit and operations.
- Stakeholder engagement: Engage investors, nonprofits, rating agencies, and other stakeholders to support transparent disclosures.
- Data and technology: Work with IT, Financial Reporting, Safety, and other units to capture accurate data and enhance data management for audit-ready disclosures, including SEC filings.
- Benchmarking: Conduct sustainability disclosure benchmarking across and outside the aviation industry.
Team and stakeholders
You will report to the Chief Sustainability Officer within the Government Affairs group, and collaborate with Legal, Finance, Operations, People, IT, Financial Reporting, Safety, internal and external audit, and external stakeholders including investors and rating agencies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in sustainability, environmental policy, or a similar area.
- 5+ years of work experience, including some direct experience leading or supporting corporate sustainability/ESG reporting and disclosure.
- Familiarity with existing and pending ESG disclosure requirements in the U.S. and other regions (for example ECGT, CSRD, ISSB).
- Preferred: knowledge of sustainability/ESG issues and reporting trends and frameworks; a master's in public policy and/or prior sustainability-related policy experience; and airline or other hard-to-abate industry experience.
- Strong research, analytical, project management, and organizational skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
