Position summary

Amey is recruiting a Graduate Environmentalist to join its Environmental E&S Highways team on a two-year Graduate Pathway starting April 2027. Working at operational level across UK highways projects, the graduate helps turn Amey's and its clients' carbon and climate-change ambitions into practical actions, with structured mentoring, learning, and a guaranteed permanent position on completion.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver low-impact solutions by working with carbon and sustainability professionals to bring zero-carbon, nature-based, and best-practice solutions across the value chain.
• Advise operational teams by providing environmental support and transferring knowledge to improve understanding on the ground.
• Support compliance and assurance by reviewing changes in law and standards and factoring environmental and social issues into decision-making.
• Manage environmental risk by identifying risks and opportunities and determining effective operational control measures, including for emergencies and climate change.
• Monitor and report performance by undertaking inspections, audits, permission applications, and investigations, and maintaining ISO 14001 certification.

Team and stakeholders

The graduate works within Amey's Environmental E&S Highways team, collaborating with environment, carbon, and sustainability professionals, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality colleagues, clients, key partners, and supply chain members, with support from a manager, mentor, and the Early Careers team.

Key details

• Two-year Graduate Pathway starting April 2027, with a guaranteed permanent position on completion.
• Nationwide location; Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
• Starting salary of £30,000 per annum, subject to review.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field such as ecology, environmental studies, sustainability, or engineering.
• Student ISEP membership desirable but not essential.
• Limited experience in the field of project management.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Analytical thinking, problem reframing, effective communication, relationship development, and drive.
• Ability to work to deadlines and on own initiative, and commitment to professional training.
