Job Description

Position summary

As an EU ETS Verifier, you will independently conduct verifications at organizations in the Netherlands and Belgium that fall under the European Emissions Trading System. Based on your assessment of their annual CO₂ reports, you will prepare a verification statement that clients submit with their CO₂ annual report to the competent authority, such as the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) or the Flemish Energy & Climate Agency (VEKA).

Why this role matters

This role provides the independent assurance that underpins the integrity of the EU Emissions Trading System. By verifying companies' CO₂ reports and emission data across industry, power, refining, and fuel distribution, the Verifier ensures regulators and markets can rely on accurate emissions data, supporting the credibility of carbon pricing and climate policy.

Key responsibilities

  • Verifications: Perform verifications for industrial companies, power plants, refineries, paper and chemical factories (EU ETS 1) or for oil traders, fuel distributors, and heating companies (EU ETS 2).
  • Client engagement: Engage in interviews with clients and staff at various levels, gain insight into production processes and emission flows, and visit sites to verify data and underlying systems.
  • Data assessment: Assess data on sold volumes and associated emissions, often based on administrative systems and chain information.
  • ISO audits: Perform ISO audits (e.g. ISO 9001, 14001, 50001, CO2 Prestatieladder) after the EU ETS peak season.

Team and stakeholders

The role is part of an experienced team of verifiers, engaging clients across industry and logistics chains and interacting with competent authorities such as the NEa and VEKA.

Key details

  • Coverage: Verifications across the Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Ways of working: Freedom to schedule your own verifications, highly varied workweeks, harmonization and subject-matter sessions, training to maintain qualifications, and the opportunity to grow as a technical lead for verification schemes and the CO2 Prestatieladder.
  • Note: Background checks are conducted on final candidates.

Requirements:

  • Experience with CO₂ emissions trading or data verification, or eagerness to learn.
  • A relevant bachelor's or master's degree (e.g. engineering, environmental science, chemistry, data).
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, customer-focused, and a strong communicator (verbal and written), with structured working, strong time management, and the ability to prioritize.
  • Well-organized, stress-resistant, and able to work independently and in a team.
  • Knowledge of EU ETS guidelines, monitoring plans, and the role of competent authorities is a plus.
  • Proficient in Dutch and English.
