Working with senior leaders, editorial, production, procurement, finance, HR, commercial teams, clients and suppliers, the role turns environmental data and insight into practical action, strengthening carbon reduction, supplier engagement and sustainability reporting.

Why this role matters

As home to brands including ELLE, Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan, Hearst UK’s environmental footprint spans paper, printing, energy and waste. The role measures and reduces that footprint, embeds environmental priorities across the business, and shares best practice across Hearst’s international publishing businesses in Europe and Asia.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead carbon footprinting by measuring, analysing and reporting Hearst UK’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint, working with internal teams and key suppliers to improve data quality and identify emissions-reduction opportunities.
  • Coordinate the environmental programme within the ISO 14001 framework, covering carbon reduction, energy, responsible paper sourcing, printing, waste and other material environmental impacts.
  • Support sustainability engagement across Hearst UK, making environmental priorities relevant, accessible and actionable for employees, editorial brands and senior leaders.
  • Support international activity by sharing methodologies, data, tools and best practice with colleagues across Hearst Magazines International in Europe and Asia.
  • Build external relationships with clients, suppliers, industry bodies and other stakeholders, representing Hearst’s approach and supporting collaborative industry initiatives.

Team and stakeholders

The role works across editorial, production, procurement, finance, HR and commercial teams and senior leaders at Hearst UK, with colleagues across Hearst Magazines International, and with clients, suppliers and industry bodies.

Key details

Requirements

  • Proven experience in environmental sustainability, with a strong practical understanding of carbon accounting, the GHG Protocol and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  • A broad understanding of sustainability issues relevant to businesses and supply chains, particularly climate change, energy, materials, responsible sourcing and supplier engagement.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the confidence to work with senior leaders, colleagues, suppliers, clients and external organisations.
  • A pragmatic, collaborative approach, able to identify and prioritise where sustainability can have the greatest impact.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to turn complex environmental information into clear recommendations and compelling business narratives.
