Position summary

Saputo, a top-10 global dairy processor, is seeking an Environmental Sustainability Manager to drive environmental management and performance at its Delhi (NY) and Newington (CT) facilities. The role oversees and manages the facilities’ Environmental Management System (EMS), systematically ensuring environmental compliance and driving progress against sustainability goals across energy, water, and waste, serving as the plant’s environmental advisor, change agent, and specialist.

Key responsibilities

• Set tactical plans by understanding what each facility needs to accomplish, determining where to focus, and developing plans to reduce energy, water, and waste.
• Deliver the plans both directly and by engaging and guiding other key players at the site.
• Implement the EMS by advocating for required resources, building EMS-related capability through tools and training, and communicating environmental progress and impact to stakeholders.
• Monitor KPIs by measuring the facilities’ environmental KPIs to ensure plans deliver results and to cultivate insights into improvement opportunities.
• Drive continual improvement by advocating and facilitating action for ongoing environmental performance improvement across both compliance and sustainability.

Team and stakeholders

The role engages and collaborates across operations, maintenance, sustainability, compliance, engineering, and sanitation teams, and acts as spokesperson to senior leadership, cross-functional teams, customers, and auditors.

Key details

This is an onsite role covering Saputo’s Delhi, NY and Newington, CT facilities, requiring regular travel between sites (at minimum once per month, 3-4 days).

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience (dairy industry knowledge/experience desirable).
• At least 3 years’ working experience in a manufacturing plant, with technical capacity for assessing and optimizing utility systems (heat & steam, compressed air, refrigeration, CIP systems), including calculating performance improvements and associated savings.
• A hands-on, boot-on-the-ground problem solver, highly motivated, able to operate independently with strong practical reasoning to break down complex problems with data, analysis, and field work.
• Direct professional experience in environmental roles, specifically in resource conservation (energy/water/waste) programs, project management in manufacturing, collecting and analyzing KPIs, or implementing environmental management systems.
• A positive, enthusiastic approach, able to rally others around the environmental program and present to key stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental standards and regulations.
• Strong language, reporting, and presentation skills.
• Strong computer skills including MS Office, data modeling/analytics, and familiarity with PLCs, process instrumentation, and process drawings.
• Ability to travel between sites regularly (minimum monthly, 3-4 days).
• Relevant certifications (e.g. AEE Certified Energy Manager, ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional) and knowledge of ISO 14000/50000 standards and EPA Energy Star / DOE Better Plants programs are a plus.
