Position summary
The SCS Railways joint venture (Skanska, Costain, STRABAG) is hiring an Environment & Sustainability Advisor to support the Environment & Sustainability team delivering the HS2 Main Works Civils Contract through construction and handover. The role plays a key part in environmental assurance, document control, and continuous improvement, ensuring environmental compliance with project, client, and joint venture requirements.

Major rail infrastructure like HS2 carries strict environmental requirements and assurance obligations. Coordinating compliance evidence, BREEAM assessment support, and the environmental management system is what keeps the project compliant with its Environmental Minimum Requirements and demonstrates responsible delivery.
Key responsibilities
- Support environmental assurance by ensuring client and JV environment and sustainability policies and statutory requirements are implemented on the contract.
- Compile compliance evidence by coordinating evidence against contract requirements across construction and handover phases, aligned to HS2 Environmental Minimum Requirements and Code of Construction Practice.
- Support BREEAM by gathering evidence against the BREEAM Infrastructure Projects Standard toward an 'Excellent' rating.
- Maintain the EMS by supporting continual improvement of the ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System.
- Manage document control through systems such as Assetwise and Enable My Team, tracking documents through review and approval workflows.
- Support stakeholders by liaising with internal teams, clients, and supply chain partners and coordinating between technical specialists and operational teams.
Team and stakeholders
The role sits in the Environment & Sustainability team (Projectwide Services) and works with operational delivery teams, environmental technical specialists, technical assurance teams, clients, and supply chain partners.
Key details
- Based at Xavier House, London, with work across London Euston, North Acton, Willesden Junction, West Ruislip, and Copthall as needed.
- Permanent; 40-hour week with 3-4 days minimum in the office; flexible working welcomed.
- Works on the HS2 Main Civils Contract (SCS JV, Lots S1 and S2).
- Closes 23 October 2026.
Requirements
Essential
- Strong administration, organisation, note-taking, and record-keeping skills.
- Experience within construction, infrastructure, environmental, or health & safety sectors.
- Good Microsoft Office 365 skills and strong written and verbal communication.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.
- Degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences or a suitably applicable field.
Preferred
- Experience with Environmental Management Systems and document management systems.
- Knowledge of environmental compliance, sustainability practices, BREEAM standards, and Power BI.
- Environmental internal audit experience.
