Job Description
Position summary
As the Engineering Design Sustainability Lead, you will shape how sustainability is embedded into global engineering decisions across Hitachi Energy's transformer business. This is a highly visible, strategic role leading the shift from downstream sustainability activities to design-led outcomes, ensuring product-level carbon reduction, material optimization, and environmental performance are built into every design choice, and translating sustainability ambitions into measurable, auditable product outcomes that balance cost, safety, quality, and performance.
Why this role matters
This role puts sustainability at the design table, where product-level impact is determined. By embedding sustainability into engineering standards and decisions, reducing product carbon footprints through smart design, and building credible, auditable product-level data, the Lead directly supports compliance, ESG reporting, and long-term business resilience amid rising expectations from customers and regulators.
Key responsibilities
- Strategy: Define and drive a global, design-led sustainability strategy within Engineering, and embed sustainability into engineering standards, processes, and decision frameworks.
- Product carbon: Reduce product-level carbon footprint through smart design, material, and architecture choices.
- Targets and data: Establish sustainability targets, KPIs, and traceable product-level data at BOM level, and strengthen governance, reporting, and audit-ready sustainability metrics.
- Cross-functional partnership: Partner across engineering, R&D, supply chain, digital, and operations teams globally.
- Capability building: Build capability and foster ownership of sustainable design within engineering teams.
- Requirements translation: Translate regulatory and customer sustainability expectations into engineering requirements, and ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Team and stakeholders
The role works across global engineering, R&D, supply chain, digital, and operations teams, influencing senior stakeholders without direct authority, and responding to customers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Master's degree or PhD in Engineering or a closely related sustainability discipline.
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years in sustainability-focused roles.
- Proven success delivering design-led sustainability or product carbon reduction initiatives.
- Strong knowledge of lifecycle assessment, sustainable materials, and carbon accounting.
- Experience leading global, cross-functional initiatives and influencing senior stakeholders.
- Strong analytical mindset with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
