Job Description
Position summary
Arup is seeking Energy Advisory Consultants / Project Managers for its Energy Advisory team in the Midlands, Wales, and West. Combining advisory and project delivery, these roles support the delivery of energy projects and programmes, advising developers, utilities, network operators, government bodies, and investors across the project lifecycle as part of the energy transition.
Why this role matters
Moving away from fossil fuels and accelerating the transformation of the global energy system are vital to a low-carbon future. Arup takes a whole-system perspective across every element of the energy system — from feasibility studies and infrastructure planning to core engineering and delivery — and this role helps turn ambitious energy ideas into lasting impact for clients shaping the UK energy system (including National Grid, NESO, DESNZ, Great British Energy, and major developers and generators).
Key responsibilities
- Manage commissions by acting as project manager on smaller commissions or supporting others on larger programmes and frameworks, accountable for scope, programme, fee, quality, and risk, across major capital projects from feasibility and consenting through procurement, construction, and handover.
- Advise clients by helping them understand their needs, assess options, and develop practical project or delivery strategies.
- Produce clear outputs such as reports, option assessments, strategies, business case inputs, and client presentations.
- Take ownership of defined work packages and manage competing priorities, escalating issues appropriately.
Team and stakeholders
The role sits within Arup’s multidisciplinary Energy Advisory team (Midlands, Wales, and West), working with colleagues across Arup and advising developers, utilities, network operators (e.g. National Grid, NESO), government and public bodies (e.g. DESNZ, Great British Energy, The Crown Estate), offshore wind developers, and major generators.
Key details
This role is based in Birmingham, with three additional UK locations, within Arup’s UKIMEA Region. Visa sponsorship is not available; applicants must have the right to work in the UK. As a trust-owned firm, Arup offers Profit Share, private medical insurance, life assurance, and flexible benefits.
Requirements
- Established experience in one or more of: onshore electricity transmission/distribution and onshore renewable generation and storage; offshore interconnectors and HVDC transmission and offshore wind; hydrogen, low-carbon fuels, and industrial decarbonisation; carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS); urban and low-carbon heat; or nuclear new build and decommissioning.
- A degree in a relevant subject and chartered or working towards it (e.g. APM, ICE, IMechE, IET, RICS, CIOB, CMI, the Energy Institute, or other relevant bodies).
- Relevant experience in consulting, project delivery, infrastructure, or the energy sector, with a track record of supporting projects or major workstreams to time, budget, and quality.
- A trusted-adviser approach: understanding client needs, challenging constructively, and turning analysis into clear recommendations.
- Ability to take ownership of deliverables, manage competing priorities, and escalate issues appropriately.
- Confident use of digital and AI tools and an interest in using them to improve delivery.
