Position summary

Sustainable Energy First is an energy and sustainability consultancy founded to solve energy management problems in very large, complex commercial estates. As an Energy & Carbon Consultant within the Sustainable Solutions team, you will contribute to the delivery of the firm’s energy and carbon Solutions services, managing your own workload across a portfolio of client projects and applying strong technical expertise to produce high-quality outputs on time and to agreed standards.

This role delivers the audits, analysis, and recommendations that turn that purpose into measurable savings, while supporting both client objectives and the firm’s wider sustainability goals, such as Target Zero.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver energy and carbon projects on time and to agreed quality standards, managing your own schedule and tasks (including site work and reporting) and escalating risks and issues appropriately.
• Apply technical expertise by producing analysis, insights, and recommendations, applying regulatory and voluntary frameworks accurately, and conducting energy and carbon audits and reports competently.
• Advise clients by building positive relationships, communicating findings clearly and professionally, and acting as a reliable point of contact under supervision.
• Contribute to the team by collaborating within project teams, sharing knowledge, supporting peers, and using feedback to develop your own capability.
• Drive continuous improvement by contributing ideas for service and product improvement, applying existing tools and methodologies consistently, and identifying risks or inefficiencies to escalate.
• Support business growth by providing technical input on sales and client enquiries and identifying opportunities for additional services.
• Support organisational impact by delivering project work that advances both client and organisational sustainability goals and building cross-departmental relationships.

Team and stakeholders

You will work within the Sustainable Solutions team, collaborating across project teams and departments and acting as a point of contact for clients.

Key details

This is a full-time, hybrid role requiring at least two days per week in the Fulwood, Preston office. The package includes a car allowance, company phone, 25 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays and your birthday, rising to 30 with service), private medical insurance, and an EV scheme.

Requirements

• Relevant degree or equivalent professional experience in a technical, environmental, sustainability-related, or consultative discipline.
• Strong analytical and numerical skills, with experience analysing and interpreting large, complex datasets.
• Demonstrable experience in energy (and/or water) and carbon management, from identifying savings opportunities to presenting findings in reports and recommendations.
• Working knowledge of UK energy and carbon regulation and frameworks.
• Experience in a business-to-business consultancy environment, acting as a trusted advisor to clients.
• Strong project management skills, delivering multiple projects to agreed quality, timescale, and budget.
• Ability to work independently across a portfolio of projects, managing priorities effectively.
• Strong problem-solving ability, professionalism, and commitment to high-quality service delivery.
• Experience conducting ESOS surveys and reporting.
