Job Description

Position summary

AECOM is recruiting experienced Environmental Consultants to join as an Associate EIA Director. You will lead and manage multidisciplinary environmental inputs to large-scale development projects across multiple consenting regimes (DCO, TCPA, TWA), spanning energy generation (including carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and renewables), energy distribution and transmission, strategic rail, highways and greenways, regeneration, and developments across ecommerce, minerals and waste, water, defence, aviation, and commercial/residential/industrial sectors.

Why this role matters

This role helps clients gain development consent for the infrastructure that underpins the UK's net zero transition. By leading EIA screening, scoping, and Environmental Statements, coordinating specialist technical inputs, and applying the mitigation hierarchy, the Associate Director improves the environmental performance of major development projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead: Lead multidisciplinary environmental inputs across projects to help clients gain development consent, including preparing EIA Screening Reports, Scoping Reports, and Environmental Statements, with technical review of specialist chapters, and managing resources, delegation, and project budgets.
  • Collaborate: Work within integrated design teams to identify environmental constraints, avoid impacts, and develop solutions in line with the mitigation hierarchy, delivering benefits where possible.
  • Create: Lead and support business opportunities and associated fee and technical proposal development.
  • Inspire: Support staff development and mentoring.
  • Champion: Promote AECOM's environmental services to internal and external audiences.

Team and stakeholders

The role works daily with technical experts in AECOM's Environmental Impact team, within integrated design teams, internal supply teams, the wider business, and a wide variety of external stakeholder groups.

Key details

  • Work arrangement: Hybrid; part-time or full-time considered; occasional travel to client offices; in-person Day 1 onboarding required.
  • ReqID: J10159390 (Business Line: Environment).

Requirements:

  • Proven experience managing EIA projects, environmental assessment methods, and applicable planning legislation (energy generation and distribution/transmission experience a distinct advantage).
  • Ability to work collaboratively, coordinating inputs from specialist technical teams, and confidence engaging a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and report writing skills, including technical reviewing with attention to detail.
  • Project management skills, including staff resource and budget management.
  • A degree in a relevant environmental discipline (preferably a Master's) and appropriate professional membership; Chartered Environmentalist status (or progressing).
  • Experience of DCO and/or TWAO consenting regimes, and interest in line management and mentoring.
