Position summary
Kier is looking for an Assistant Environmental Specialist to join its team in the North of England across the road, rail, water, and property sectors. Working within the Environmental Team, you will support the delivery of environmental consultancy services across a range of UK projects, gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from experienced professionals while building a strong foundation in environmental management.

This early-career role helps deliver the environmental assessments, plans, and compliance work that keep major infrastructure projects on the right side of environmental law while developing the next generation of environmental specialists.
Key responsibilities
- Produce technical documents by supporting the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments, Management Plans, and Method Statements.
- Support compliance by aiding in obtaining and adhering to environmental licences, permits, and consents.
- Carry out inspections including Environmental Clerk of Works duties.
- Support meetings with clients, stakeholders, and technical teams.
- Assist business development by helping prepare bids and fee proposals.
Team and stakeholders
You will work within Kier’s Environmental Team, receiving mentorship from experienced professionals and engaging with clients, stakeholders, and technical teams across projects.
Key details
This is a 37.5-hour-per-week role based in the North of England (Penrith, Cumbria area), with some flexibility on hours available. A full driving licence is required, and the role requires a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service check. Sponsorship is not available for this role.
Requirements
- A degree (or working towards a degree) in an environmental-related discipline.
- Graduate membership of ISEP or equivalent.
- A genuine interest in a career in environmental management and the construction industry, with clear motivation to learn and develop professionally.
- Enthusiasm for learning new skills and the ability to adapt in response to feedback.
- A full driving licence.
