Event Details

2026 United Nations Water Conference: convened by the UN and co-hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Senegal, the conference will take place from 2–4 December 2026 in the UAE.It is the second UN Water Conference of its kind and will gather heads of state, ministers, international organisations, private sector leaders, scientists, and civil society representatives. The summit focuses on ensuring water security and advancing progress on SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation as the world enters the final five years of the 2030 Agenda.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the conference is to mobilize investment, innovation, and political will to accelerate global progress on water and sanitation. It aims to highlight interlinkages between water and other SDGs, address inequalities in access, and showcase scalable solutions. The event also seeks to encourage partnerships and commitments from governments, businesses, and civil society to ensure a water-secure and climate-resilient future.

Key Activities

The three-day conference will include high-level plenaries, interactive dialogues on themes such as water scarcity, sanitation access, water-climate linkages, financing water solutions, and transboundary cooperation. Side events led by stakeholders and partner organisations will feature innovations, case studies, and regional experiences. Networking sessions and partnership forums will provide opportunities to announce new pledges and strengthen coalitions.

Significance

This summit is particularly significant because it falls just five years before the 2030 deadline for the SDGs. With billions still lacking safe water and sanitation, the event will underscore water’s central role in health, gender equality, food security, energy, biodiversity, and climate resilience. By co-hosting with Senegal in the UAE, the conference bridges priorities of both developed and developing regions, and positions water at the heart of global climate and development discourse.

Expected Outcomes

Expected outcomes include new political commitments, financing mechanisms, and partnerships to deliver on SDG 6. It is anticipated that member states, private actors, and civil society will present pledges on expanding water access, wastewater treatment, nature-based solutions, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The conference aims to leave behind a “Water Action Agenda” with concrete initiatives and measurable goals, ensuring that water becomes a catalyst for broader SDG achievement.
