The 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP 30, is set to take place from November 10 to November 21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil. This event marks the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), alongside the 20th meeting of the Kyoto Protocol, the 7th meeting of the Paris Agreement, and the 63rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and Subsidiary Body for Implementation. The conference will bring together representatives from nearly 200 countries, as well as non-governmental organizations, businesses, and civil society, to discuss and advance global climate policies in a critical effort to address climate change.
The primary purpose of COP 30 is to strengthen international cooperation to combat climate change and accelerate progress toward the goals of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The conference will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through enhanced national commitments, supporting vulnerable nations in adapting to climate impacts such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events, and scaling up climate finance to provide at least $300 billion annually by 2035, with an ambition to reach $1.3 trillion by the same year. A key initiative, Brazil’s proposed Tropical Forests Forever Facility, a $125 billion fund, will aim to reward tropical forest conservation starting in 2026. Additionally, the conference will prioritize the transition to renewable energy and low-carbon solutions, while emphasizing climate justice to ensure equitable outcomes for vulnerable populations, integrating human rights into climate strategies.
The conference will feature a range of activities to drive climate action. A pre-COP ministerial meeting, scheduled for October 13-14, 2025, in Brasília, will set the stage for negotiations by addressing key issues in advance. The main event in Belém will include high-level discussions, workshops, and side events, with a significant focus on the global stocktake to evaluate progress toward Paris Agreement targets. Countries are expected to submit updated Nationally Determined Contributions by February 2025, outlining their climate commitments, and COP 30 will review these submissions to assess global ambition. Regional dialogues, such as capacity-building workshops for African nations and small island states, and discussions on carbon pricing feasibility will foster collaboration. The conference will also emphasize youth engagement, integrating young people’s perspectives into climate policy-making to ensure inclusive decision-making.
Hosted in Belém, in the heart of the Amazon region, COP 30 highlights the critical role of tropical forests in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity. Brazil’s leadership aims to position the country as a champion of forest conservation and climate finance, leveraging its unique position to advocate for the Global South. The conference is a pivotal moment to translate existing agreements into actionable outcomes, moving beyond prolonged negotiations to deliver measurable progress. By setting the tone for climate action through 2035, COP 30 seeks to foster global cooperation, strengthen commitments, and ensure accountability in addressing the climate crisis.
COP 30 is poised to deliver significant outcomes for global climate action. The conference aims to finalize the Tropical Forests Forever Facility, securing investments to support tropical forest conservation. It will also advance climate finance commitments, ensuring equitable support for developing nations. By focusing on implementation, COP 30 seeks to strengthen global cooperation, enhance national climate plans, and drive progress toward a sustainable, low-carbon future, setting a critical foundation for climate efforts leading up to 2035.
