The GRI Professional Certification Program, offered through the GRI Academy, is a professional learning pathway designed to build recognised expertise in sustainability reporting using the GRI Standards. The program develops practical understanding of impact reporting, human rights disclosure, sector-specific reporting, and the wider sustainability reporting environment. Successful completion of the required courses and final exam leads to the designation of GRI Certified Sustainability Professional, providing formal recognition of a learner’s knowledge and ability to apply the GRI Standards.
The current certification pathway comprises four courses: Reporting with the GRI Standards; Reporting on Human Rights with the GRI Standards; Navigating the GRI Sector Standards; and Transparency for Tomorrow: Decoding the Sustainability Reporting Landscape (2025). Together, these courses cover the foundations and practical application of GRI reporting, human rights considerations, sector-specific disclosure requirements, and the evolving sustainability reporting environment. Learners must complete all four courses before becoming eligible for the Professional Certification Exam.
Participants will develop the ability to apply the GRI Standards effectively, structure credible sustainability disclosures, address human rights impacts, and use the GRI Sector Standards within reporting processes. The program also strengthens understanding of the broader sustainability reporting environment and helps professionals improve the quality, consistency, and credibility of organisational reporting. Successful candidates demonstrate recognised capability in GRI-based sustainability reporting and its practical application.
The program is designed for sustainability and ESG professionals, reporting specialists, consultants, corporate responsibility teams, communications professionals, and others involved in preparing, reviewing, or advising on sustainability reports. It is particularly relevant for professionals seeking formal recognition of their ability to work with the GRI Standards or those looking to strengthen their sustainability reporting credentials through a globally recognised professional certification.
The program offers two flexible learning routes: Route A, completed online and self-paced through the GRI Academy, and Route B, which combines instructor-led training through GRI Certified Training Partners with the remaining certification requirements. After completing the four compulsory courses, learners take the online GRI Professional Certification Exam through the GRI Academy. The exam consists of 40 questions, must be completed within 60 minutes, and requires a score of 75% to pass. It is currently available in English and Spanish and can be taken on demand once the required learning pathway has been completed.
Passing the exam awards the title GRI Certified Sustainability Professional and a digital credential from GRI. Certification is valid for one year and can be maintained by completing at least four Continuing Education Units before it expires, encouraging professionals to keep their sustainability reporting knowledge current. The program provides recognised professional development directly from GRI and supports stronger credibility for practitioners working with one of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting frameworks.
