Course Details

Sustainable Urban Development, offered by DelftX through edX, is an online course designed to examine the major sustainability challenges facing metropolitan regions and the role cities can play in solving them. The course explores how urbanization, emissions, and social pressures intersect in cities, while emphasizing that these challenges require holistic, systemic, and transdisciplinary responses. Developed by TU Delft and Wageningen University & Research as part of the educational program of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, it introduces learners to the principles needed to make metropolitan regions more just, prosperous, and sustainable.

Core Content

The curriculum is structured around major metropolitan challenges and themes, using a matrix format that lets learners follow either a specific urban challenge or a thematic pathway. TU Delft OpenCourseWare lists subjects including introduction, urban growth, socio-economic change, climate change, resource shortage, digitization and geodata, and synthesis. This structure reflects the course’s emphasis on integrating urban planning, design, engineering, systems analysis, policymaking, social sciences, and entrepreneurship within the metropolitan context.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to understand the complexity of metropolitan sustainability challenges and assess them through a more integrated urban lens. The course helps learners build a stronger understanding of systems thinking, urban sustainability, transdisciplinary problem-solving, and the implementation of city-level solutions across areas such as climate, resources, and socio-economic change. It also encourages learners to compare their own city with broader global urban conditions and reflect on how change can be designed and implemented in practice.

Target Learners

This course is designed for learners interested in the challenges of 21st century metropolitan regions and how these can be addressed from within cities and by their inhabitants. It is particularly relevant for students, urban practitioners, planners, designers, policymakers, and general learners seeking a broad introduction to sustainable urban development. The transdisciplinary framing also makes it suitable for those who want to understand cities from multiple perspectives rather than through a single technical field alone.

Learning Format

Hosted on edX, the course is delivered in a self-paced online format with an estimated duration of seven weeks and a study effort of four to six hours per week. The course is designed to support active participation, including reflection on one’s own city and comparisons with urban conditions elsewhere. Its matrix structure gives learners flexibility in how they move through metropolitan themes and challenges while building a connected understanding of urban sustainability.

Additional Benefits

The course offers practical value for learners who want a broader and more applied understanding of sustainable urban transformation. Its connection to the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions adds institutional depth, while the involvement of TU Delft and Wageningen University & Research gives it a strong interdisciplinary academic base. The course also invites learners to contribute observations from their own city, making the experience more reflective and globally comparative than a standard urban sustainability overview.
