Course Details

Sustainability Education, offered by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through Coursera, is an introductory online course designed to explore the emerging field of Sustainability Education and its relationship to sustainability, climate education, and environmental science. The course is intended for educators, students, and lifelong learners, and examines how environmental change intersects with justice, poverty, and inequality across the lifespan. It provides a structured introduction to the history, language, and practical relevance of sustainability education in a rapidly changing world.

Core Content

The curriculum is structured across six modules and combines environmental history, sustainability education, environmental justice, and policy literacy. It traces key developments in environmental and climate history from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, examines the foundations of sustainability and climate education, and explores environmental justice in the twenty-first century. The course also looks at how race, class, and other social factors shape environmental decision-making in the United States, before introducing how federal and state laws, regulations, and political processes influence real-world environmental outcomes.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to understand core concepts in sustainability education, connect environmental change with broader social issues, and interpret how education and policy shape environmental outcomes. Coursera lists skills such as Climate Change Programs, K–12 pedagogy, Sustainable Development, Environmental Science, World History, Socioeconomics, Environmental Regulations, Curriculum Planning, Policy Analysis, Community Organizing, and Social Justice among the course outcomes. These themes give learners both conceptual grounding and practical language for teaching, learning, and discussion.

Target Learners

This course is designed for educators, students, and lifelong learners who want a clearer understanding of sustainability education and its wider relevance. It is particularly useful for those interested in climate education, environmental history, environmental justice, and the role of policy in shaping sustainability outcomes. Because Coursera describes it as a course to “gain insight into a topic and learn the fundamentals,” it is best suited to learners seeking an accessible introduction rather than advanced specialist study.

Learning Format

Hosted on Coursera, the course is delivered in a flexible online format that allows learners to study at their own pace. The current listing shows six modules and an estimated completion time of four hours. The learning experience includes videos, readings, discussion prompts, and four assignments, and Coursera notes that the course offers a shareable certificate, was recently updated in April 2026, and is included with Coursera Plus.

Additional Benefits

The course offers practical value for learners who want to understand sustainability education as both a field of study and a tool for real-world change. Its combination of environmental history, justice, and policy helps learners build a broader and more connected perspective than a narrow climate-only course. Because it is designed for audiences across the lifespan and emphasizes context, language, and action, it also serves as a useful foundation for further work in teaching, community engagement, and sustainability-related learning.
