Course Details

Sustainability and the Circular Economy, offered by the University of Colorado Boulder through Coursera, is a beginner-level online course designed to introduce learners to the foundations of sustainability and circular economy thinking. As the first course in the Applied Sustainability for Technical Managers Specialization, it aims to provide strategies and tools for integrating sustainability into everyday life and into the companies where learners work. The course examines climate change, human impact on the environment, and the need to rethink business practices in a world moving toward a larger and more resource-constrained population.

Core Content

The curriculum is structured across four modules and explores climate change, environmental impacts, zero-carbon energy transition, and the broader systems changes needed for a more sustainable future. It examines sustainable transportation, energy-efficient homes, sustainable food systems, regenerative agriculture, and more durable and equitable approaches to clothing and product design. The course concludes with an overview of the circular economy as a way to decouple economic growth from traditional resource extraction. Coursera also notes that the course was developed in collaboration with Siemens Digital Industries Software and is part of the Design for the Circular Economy collection.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to understand core sustainability challenges and identify how circular economy approaches can respond to them. The course helps learners build skills in circular economy thinking, sustainability strategy, design innovation, sustainable design, waste reduction, and environmental awareness. It also supports a broader understanding of how technical, business, and systems-level choices influence resource use, product life cycles, and long-term resilience. By the end of the course, learners gain a stronger foundation for applying sustainability and circular economy ideas in practical settings.

Target Learners

This course is designed for engineers, scientists, technical professionals, and general learners who want an accessible introduction to sustainability and the circular economy. It is particularly relevant for those interested in integrating sustainability into product design, business strategy, and everyday decision-making. Because Coursera lists it as beginner level with no prior experience required, it is also suitable for learners seeking a practical foundation before moving into more advanced study or applied professional work.

Learning Format

Hosted on Coursera, the course is delivered in a flexible online format with four modules and an estimated completion time of two weeks at around ten hours per week. The learning experience includes videos, readings, discussion prompts, and assignments, allowing learners to study at their own pace while building understanding progressively. Coursera also notes that the course includes four assignments, offers a shareable certificate, and can count for academic credit as part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Master of Engineering in Engineering Management offered on the Coursera platform.

Additional Benefits

The course offers practical value for learners seeking both foundational sustainability knowledge and broader professional relevance. Its collaboration with Siemens Digital Industries Software adds industry context, and Coursera notes that learners who complete and pass the course can receive an industry-recognized digital badge. The course is linked to the Design for the Circular Economy collection and can count for academic credit in CU Boulder’s engineering management program, making it helpful for learners who are thinking about further studies or careers in sustainability that focus on leadership.
