Course Details

Renewable Energy and Green Building Entrepreneurship, offered by Duke University through Coursera, is a beginner-level online course designed to help learners explore how entrepreneurship can create both commercial value and positive environmental impact. The course focuses on launching new businesses or internal corporate initiatives across renewable energy, green building, finance, real estate, engineering, design, and environmental sectors. It emphasizes practical action rather than theory, using real-world examples and step-by-step business development tools.

Core Content

The course is structured across five modules covering entrepreneurship, green building, renewable energy, business opportunities, sector challenges, financing, and venture development. Learners examine successful case studies, identify problems that could be addressed through sustainable products or services, and explore how entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs create new opportunities. The curriculum also introduces tools such as the one-page business idea summary and the Business Model Canvas to help learners refine and test new concepts.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to identify market opportunities in renewable energy and green building, analyse successful sustainable businesses, and assess potential challenges and solutions. The course also builds skills in entrepreneurship, business planning, business modelling, entrepreneurial finance, stakeholder engagement, innovation, sustainable design, team building, and market analysis. Learners gain practical experience developing ideas that could become new ventures or internal sustainability initiatives.

Target Learners

This course is designed for students, aspiring entrepreneurs, professionals, and career changers interested in renewable energy, green buildings, sustainable business, or environmental innovation. It is particularly relevant for learners who want to launch a new venture, develop a business idea, or drive innovation within an existing organisation. Coursera classifies the course as beginner level and states that no prior experience is required.

Learning Format

Hosted on Coursera, the course is delivered in a flexible online format with five modules and an estimated completion time of two weeks at around ten hours per week. The learning experience includes videos, readings, assignments, peer-reviewed activities, case studies, and applied business-planning exercises. Coursera also notes that the course includes three assignments, is taught in English with 22 language options available, offers a shareable certificate, and allows learners to progress at their own pace.

Additional Benefits

The course provides a practical route from sustainability interest to business action by helping learners develop and refine their own renewable energy or green building ideas. Its emphasis on real companies, investor engagement, and business-model development makes it especially useful for learners who want to move beyond conceptual sustainability knowledge and begin testing commercially viable solutions. The course is taught by Duke University instructor Chris Wedding.
