Ethics in Action

Ethics in Action, offered by SDG Academy through edX, is an online course designed to explore the moral dimensions of sustainable development. The course starts from the idea that today’s sustainability challenges are not only technical or political, but also ethical, asking learners to reflect on what makes a good person and what values are needed to support a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. It draws on the Ethics in Action initiative launched through meetings at the Vatican that brought together leaders from major religious traditions, philosophers, scholars, and scientists to discuss shared values for transformative action.

Core Content

The curriculum examines what the world’s major religious and secular philosophies say about ethical conduct and which virtues are shared across faiths and cultures. It explores the role of ethics, spirituality, and religious communities in addressing global challenges such as poverty, corruption, and climate change. The course also presents multi-faith cooperation as an important part of advancing sustainable development and calls for the development of a shared virtue ethics that can support a sustainable and peaceful future.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to understand virtue ethics in relation to sustainable development, interpret how different traditions approach ethical conduct, and assess the role of moral values, spirituality, and religious communities in responding to global challenges. Learning Format

Hosted through edX and SDG Academy, the course is delivered in a flexible online format with 10 modules, accessible at any time, and an expected study effort of two to four hours per module. The learning experience includes perspectives from Ethics in Action meeting participants and other leading voices, allowing learners to progress at their own pace while building practical understanding step by step. SDG Academy also notes that the course is free and offered in English.
