Course Details

Engineering Materials for the Circular Future, offered by Aalto University Executive Education and Professional Development (Aalto EE), is an online professional course focused on applying circular economy principles to material selection, product development, and sustainability strategies. The course explores how complex materials can be redesigned, reused, recycled, and managed throughout their lifecycle to support more sustainable production systems. It is designed for professionals working with materials, product innovation, sustainability, and circular economy transformation.

Core Content

The course is structured across six modules covering circular economy principles, material challenges, resource efficiency, recycling approaches, alternative end-of-life strategies, circularity assessment, and sustainable material design. Learners explore recycling, repurposing, cascading, biodegradation, material lifecycle thinking, thermodynamic principles of recyclability, and the environmental and societal trade-offs associated with different material choices. The programme uses real-world examples from sectors including electronics, packaging, construction, textiles, and automotive industries.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to evaluate material choices from a circular economy perspective and identify opportunities to improve product sustainability. The course builds skills in circular design, lifecycle thinking, material assessment, recycling strategies, sustainability evaluation, resource efficiency, product development, supply chain considerations, and decision-making around environmental trade-offs.

Target Learners

This course is designed for professionals involved in materials, product development, sustainability, and circular economy initiatives. It is particularly relevant for engineers, designers, R&D specialists, sustainability managers, educators, and professionals working on corporate sustainability targets, packaging strategies, supply chains, and material lifecycle management. The course is suitable for participants with a basic to intermediate understanding of material science or sustainability and is applicable across industries including electronics, energy, automotive, packaging, textiles, and construction.

Learning Format

The course is delivered through a flexible online format consisting of six modules and is worth 2 ECTS credits, equivalent to approximately 54 hours of study time. The learning experience includes video lectures, curated readings, hands-on assignments, real-world case examples, and a final assessment evaluating learners’ understanding of circularity strategies and sustainable material design. Participants receive 90 days of access to course materials and can complete the programme through a relaxed schedule of 5–6 hours per week over 9–11 weeks or an intensive schedule of 6–8 hours per week over 6–8 weeks.

Additional Benefits

The course provides practical tools for professionals seeking to move beyond traditional recycling approaches and adopt broader circular design strategies. By combining materials science, sustainability principles, and industry examples, the programme helps participants identify new opportunities for reducing resource use, improving product design, and supporting circular business models. Learners also gain insights from a multidisciplinary expert team and apply concepts directly to real organisational challenges.
