Business Transformation in the Digital Age, offered by the University of Edinburgh Business School, is an MBA-level online course designed to help business leaders and professionals understand how digital technologies are reshaping competition, business models, products, services, and organisational operations. The course combines conceptual frameworks, evidence-based research, and practical case studies to help learners develop and implement effective digital transformation strategies.
The curriculum examines the opportunities and risks associated with digital business transformation and explores how organisations can develop new digital capabilities. Learners analyse the impact of digital technologies on business models, products, services, operations, customer experiences, and competitive positioning. The course also addresses common mistakes in digitisation journeys and introduces frameworks and tools for developing innovative solutions to complex transformation challenges.
Participants will develop the ability to assess the strategic impact of digital technologies, identify opportunities for digital transformation, and develop strategies for implementing organisational change. The course builds skills in digital strategy, business model innovation, technology management, organisational transformation, strategic decision-making, innovation, customer experience, problem-solving, and critical analysis.
This course is designed for business leaders and professionals seeking to develop a deeper understanding of digital business transformation and its implications for their organisations. It is particularly relevant for professionals responsible for innovation, strategy, operations, growth, and digital change who want to improve operational efficiency, develop new capabilities, and lead transformation initiatives.
The course is delivered as a 12-week online MBA course requiring approximately 100 hours of study. The learning experience combines pre-recorded lectures, case studies, and live online tutorials held approximately every two weeks, where participants apply concepts from the lectures through cases and shared discussion. Learners join the existing Online MBA cohort, providing opportunities for peer networking and knowledge exchange. Assessment consists of an individual workplace-focused assignment analysing how a traditional manual system can be digitised within an organisation. Successful participants receive a University of Edinburgh Business School certificate and 10 SCQF credits, equivalent to 5 ECTS credits, which can contribute towards the University of Edinburgh MBA or Online MBA.
The course provides a direct pathway between digital transformation theory and workplace implementation. Its practical assignment requires learners to develop a digital transformation solution for a real organisational process, helping translate course learning into an actionable business proposal. Led by Dr Nkosana Mafico, Lecturer in Strategy at the University of Edinburgh Business School, the course also provides access to an international Online MBA peer network and the opportunity to build capabilities relevant to senior digital leadership.
