The Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership is a prestigious, part-time Master’s degree offered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). Designed for working professionals and senior leaders, the programme develops the strategic, analytical, and leadership capabilities needed to navigate global sustainability challenges and drive transformative change. Core Content

The curriculum blends academic insights with practical business application, drawing on expertise from Cambridge departments such as Engineering, Geography, Land Economy, Zoology, and the Judge Business School. Learners study the changing global context of sustainability, systems transformations, leadership for change, strategic levers for impact, sustainability research approaches, and effective communication and engagement. Teaching is delivered through a combination of residential workshops in Cambridge and structured online modules, supported by applied assignments and an extended research project. The programme emphasises real-world application, peer learning, and critical analysis, enabling students to connect theory with organisational challenges.

Learning Format

The programme offers two routes: a continuous two-year option requiring steady weekly study, or a flexible route allowing learners to complete the Certificate, Diploma, and Master’s stages over several years (up to a maximum of ten). Teaching is delivered through a blend of online coursework and immersive residential workshops in Cambridge. Continuous-route students attend four week-long workshops, while flexible-route students complete shorter workshops aligned with each stage. Assessment includes individual assignments, a group project, and a major research dissertation or essay.
