TikTok partners with Climeworks to remove 5,100 tons of CO₂ by 2030, while Two Drifters commits to 1,067 tons by 2032. The initiatives align sustainability with financial strategy.
TikTok’s Commitment to Carbon Removal
TikTok has entered a multi-year agreement with Climeworks to remove 5,100 tons of CO₂ by 2030. This initiative integrates Direct Air Capture, Biochar, and Reforestation to align with global best practices for carbon removal.
Ian Gill, Global Head of Sustainability at TikTok, emphasized the strategic selection of Climeworks, stating, “We carefully evaluated multiple providers to build a high-quality carbon removal portfolio. Climeworks provided a solution that meets our highest standards and aligns perfectly with our sustainability strategy as we work toward carbon neutrality by 2030.”
The Financial Rationale Behind Carbon Removal
Beyond environmental responsibility, TikTok’s early investment in carbon removal is a strategic financial move. With carbon pricing mechanisms evolving, securing removal credits now allows companies to lock in lower costs and mitigate potential price hikes in the future.
Two Drifters Embeds Carbon Costs into Pricing Model
Two Drifters Distillery, a British rum producer, has also expanded its partnership with Climeworks, committing to remove 1,067 tons of CO₂ by 2032. Since 2020, the distillery has pioneered a business model where carbon removal costs are embedded into its Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).
Dr. Russ Wakeham, Co-Founder of Two Drifters, explained, “The more carbon we avoid through sustainable practices, the greater our margins become.” This strategy showcases a practical approach to integrating sustainability with profitability, demonstrating how emission reduction can enhance financial performance.
Scaling Carbon Removal Accessibility
Climeworks’ self-service carbon removal platform, launched in 2019, has already attracted over 21,000 individual customers, including ten23 health and 118Group. As the company scales operations, it offers businesses customized carbon removal solutions that support net-zero ambitions while ensuring long-term economic resilience.
