Global Coalition Launched to Embed Sustainability into Supply Chains

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, businesses and governments came together to launch the Coalition for Sustainable Procurement, a joint public–private initiative aimed at embedding sustainability into purchasing and supply chains worldwide. Spearheaded by the UN Global Compact, the coalition seeks to transform procurement from a compliance exercise into a driver of climate action, biodiversity protection, fair labour, and resilient economic growth.

Scope and Strategic Framework

The coalition brings together a diverse group of founding members including Schneider Electric, BBVA, KPMG, Outokumpu, Intrepid Travel, S&P Global, Safaricom, JDE Peet’s, ReNew, and Altus Power, alongside several other corporations and industry initiatives. By uniting stakeholders from finance, energy, consumer goods, and technology, the coalition signals a new phase of global cooperation to make sustainable procurement the norm rather than the exception. The launch event, hosted at New York’s Chrysler Building, convened chief procurement officers, sustainability executives, ministers, and policymakers for a high-level dialogue. Participants underscored the importance of aligning regulatory frameworks with corporate action, while emphasizing the role of government procurement in setting standards that can ripple across industries and regions.

Economic and Environmental Impact

Procurement decisions shape trillions of dollars in annual spending and influence supply chains that span every sector of the global economy. By embedding sustainability criteria into these decisions, the coalition aims to unlock new opportunities for decarbonisation, biodiversity protection, and labour rights improvements. For small and medium-sized enterprises, participation in global value chains could also become easier as procurement standards are harmonized and transaction costs are reduced. Coinciding with its launch, the coalition released its first report, Procurement: A Catalyst for Sustainable Growth and Resilience. The publication maps current practices, highlights gaps in supplier engagement, and consolidates tools and case studies to guide organizations on integrating ESG into purchasing strategies.

Corporate Governance and Transparency

The coalition’s structure is designed to support both corporate accountability and policymaking. It will provide a platform for companies to share data, case studies, and lessons learned from real-world implementation, while also informing governments on where regulations can be most effective. The approach aims to bridge the gap between global ESG frameworks and the day-to-day realities of procurement teams, offering practical tools to balance cost, quality, and delivery with environmental and social impact. Transparency is a central feature, with members committing to publish outcomes and share guidance broadly across industries. This collaborative governance model ensures that the coalition does not merely serve as a convening forum, but as an active driver of harmonized standards and actionable solutions.

Challenges to Scaling

Despite growing momentum for sustainable supply chains, significant challenges remain. Companies face high costs and operational complexity in tracking upstream emissions, enforcing labour standards, and ensuring responsible sourcing across diverse geographies. Fragmented regulations and varying industry standards add further barriers, often discouraging smaller suppliers from participating. The coalition acknowledges these obstacles, emphasizing that collective action is essential to reduce duplication, share resources, and develop scalable tools. Without such collaboration, individual efforts risk being too fragmented to deliver systemic impact.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, the coalition plans to prioritize three areas: building a platform for ongoing public private collaboration, developing shared guidance and tools for procurement professionals, and translating dialogue into joint initiatives that advance sustainable procurement on the ground. If successful, the coalition could mark a turning point in how supply chains are managed, creating a framework where procurement drives systemic change rather than incremental adjustments. For governments, it offers a mechanism to design supportive regulations, while for companies, it provides pathways to operationalize ESG commitments across global value chains. By aligning incentives across the public and private sectors, the Coalition for Sustainable Procurement aspires to hard-wire sustainability into the foundations of global trade, advancing climate and nature goals while enabling more resilient and equitable economies.
