China Launches World’s First Carbon Fibre Metro Train

China launches the world’s first carbon fibre metro train, reducing energy use, CO2 emissions, and maintenance costs, while offering faster, smoother, and quieter rides for passengers.

China has unveiled the Cetrovo 1.0 Carbon Star Express, the world’s first metro train constructed from carbon fibre composites. Now operating on a 37-mile route in Qingdao, Shandong province, the train marks a significant leap in sustainable transportation.

The innovative use of carbon fibre, a lightweight and durable material often associated with luxury cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini, makes the train 11% lighter than traditional metro trains. This weight reduction results in 7% lower energy consumption, cutting CO2 emissions by up to 130 tonnes annually—equivalent to planting 100 acres of trees. Carbon fibre’s strength, five times that of steel at only 25% of the weight, also enhances the train’s impact resistance and durability, promising lower maintenance costs and improved safety.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the Cetrovo train offers passengers a smoother and quieter ride, thanks to reduced vibrations. Advanced technologies such as automated operation, anti-collision warnings, and obstacle detection systems further enhance its efficiency and safety. During testing, the train achieved speeds of over 87 mph, significantly faster than the typical 50 mph of most metro systems in China.

The train is the result of years of research and development by CRRC Qingdao Sifang, a state-owned enterprise that began work on the project in 2021. After rigorous testing, the Cetrovo made its official debut in January 2025, servicing 41 stations along its route in Qingdao.

China’s breakthrough in incorporating carbon fibre composites into metro systems has the potential to revolutionize public transportation worldwide, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional steel-based designs.
